With 200 you can play cash games with blinds of up to 5c/10c. If you want to play higher then yea you have to deposit more.

The general rule is that *if* you are a winning player, you should have at least 20 full buy-ins at the level you are going to play.

$1/$2 No Limit Hold'Em has a buy-in of $200, so you would want $4,000 in reserve to protect you against downswings without going broke.

$.05/$.10 No Limit Hold'Em has a buy-in of $10, so you would want a $200 bankroll.

how much do you need to be successful though?

It takes more than bankroll to be successful.
Even if you could make all the right moves based on available information, you will go on losing streaks. Having a big bankroll protects you from going broke during these streaks.

But of course, if you are a losing player your career is a losing streak, so no matter how much you have in reserve you will keep burning through it.

The good (I guess?) news is that your bankroll is really how much you are willing to deposit. If you are willing to deposit $200 ten times in a row, then that's like having a $2,000 bankroll.

How much do you need? Well there are several players who started with less than $100 and have gone on to earn millions: Tom Dwan and the Dang brothers come to mind.

i wuld say 30buyin for micro stakes to mid stakes. once u reach mid stakes, it's best to have 50 buy ins.... i read some site there r conservative players using 100 buy ins...

Annette Obrestad started with $0. When she began playing online, she was only 15 and had no way to deposit, so she played freerolls.

As for being successful, that's really a matter of how you define success. For instance, if it means winning at least $50k or $100k per year, you'll want a far larger bankroll and more self-discipline managing it than if it just means winning $100 or even $1000 per year.

And of course, it takes being sufficiently better than the opponents you choose to play. If you can't select games where you're +EV, you won't be successful winning over the long run.

You don't. Dwan wasn't talented & intelligent, and I'm going to play the odds and say you don't possess his talent or intelligence.

But in the off chance that you do have Dwan level talent, the way you start is by throwing ~$300 into a poker site, and playing with proper bankroll management.

I would rather freeroll it, not because im scroogey, but just feels more satisfying knowing you are playing with free money. If you cant cash in a freeroll, one could argue you shouldnt play high stakes. Thats what id do anyway :)

I started at 0 and have cashed out a few hundred bucks and can continue to play with a decent bankroll on PS and FT, so I guess Id call that successful. Successful means different things to different people. I just want to play my couple games a day and if my bankroll is growing, even really slowly its been successful.

If you want that $200 to start paying your bills, I would have to say you are a little bit a head of yourself. And yes playing $1/$2 with a $200 bankroll is not how you be successful. The only way is to stay within your bankroll unless your going to keep depositing.

Bankroll Management

Chris Ferguson went from 0 to 10k on full tilt a year or so ago..and developed a very good bankroll management stragety,,Id highly recommend googling and reading fergusons bankroll management stragety,,that will give you an idea of what levels you can play at with your bankroll...one would think that the more you play with the more you can win,,,,true,,but also the more you can lose,,,the first question you have to ask,,,is,,what can i afford to lose??? if you play with money you are worried about losing..it WILL negatively effect your play...gl in all the good you do

You can lost your 200$ in 2 minutes, if you don't play with the strategy who meens you must take it easy.
You just can move up a level when you make more $ and you don't must to deposit more money. If you want play at high stacks deposit more, with that stack you will lose everythink.
