Some people win freerolls consistently... Somehow they care more about their outcome in freerolls than I do. What's the trick to caring when you dont pay to play?

Should I wipe myself with a belt every time I lose a free roll or make a stupid decision.. Or maybe a snap of a rubberband to the wrist would be more sustainable..

I really want free rolls to matter because i put my time and energy into them and i do realize at least on a thinking level that every hour im spending in poker, im losing time doing something else.. so i just wish that time playing poker was more important to me, specifically when playing freerolls.

PRIDE, as a poker player I want to do well. if you can't win a freeroll then paying a buy in of any size won't change your game.
people play bad in freerolls because they are bad. others play bad because they are learning.
paying more may make you care more but caring more means nothing.

here are our freeroll totals from last year. who has a bigger bankroll?

I like to use freerolls to practice patience, position, and picking my spots. Keep it in perspective.

I play free rolls as seriously as any poker game. I find if u play carelessly in a free roll or real cheap micro it rubs off onto the way you play in more expensive tables. Plus free rolls usually have a lot more entrants and I try see how far I can get through the mass amount of players. (Usually not very far) lol

Free rolls should be regarded as a tool to learn from. I might say that they are the next step up from play money poker, treat them like they are ultra micro limits and dont waste your time just trying to break the bubble... go for first place every time that way if you bust out early it will be less time spent and when you do make it past the bubble you will be in a position to make more than .50cents :)

It's just a mindset bro, basic economics. The moment you entered the tourney it doesn't matter what you paid for entrance (no matter if it's free or $100) since that won't change anyways. The only thing what matters is what you get out of it.

If you're really result oriented that is, I play mostly for fun tho.

So basically don't focus on what you paid but on what you can win, that might get you a bit more serious for freerolls.

Unfortunately, I would say the majority of people in freerolls are not playing smart poker weather because they dont care or because they are not risking any money. Yes, some play well but the majority wont. Because of this I would find it hard to believe that anyone could final table consistently.

Therefore, do not let losses affect you in a way that you will question your game. If you are then you should take a break for a while...

It's up to you on whether you want to take freerolls seriously or not. I don't think anyone can really help you with that issue.

If you see it as free and not worth your effort or it's not important to you, then don't put in the effort to play it. At the same time, don't whine about not being able to do well in these games either.

Your excuse that the time spending time playing poker could be time spent doing something else is a weak one. You can literally say that about everything else. Everything you will take some time and effort to complete. MTTs are no exception. Most MTTs will last at least 4+ hours. Obviously more if there are more players, deeper stacks, re-buys, re-entries, etc.

So, if you can't commit to at least that much time playing an MTT, then yeah, it probably isn't worth your effort.

^ I couldn't agree more! I take my Freeroll seriously with the aim of winning them. Sometimes I make money, sometimes I lose. But it is free money none the less.

Look at freerolls as a wsop event. What I mean is that you have to navigate through a large tournament field to win the money. Treat it the same.

You will learn and practice lots with freerolls. Position play, squeeze plays, steals, check raising, bluffing, pot odds, etc and it costs you nothing.

Patience is your best friend when it comes to this game!

I look at it like a time investment, and in turn, time = money. I could be doing other things with my time, so if I'm going to invest time in a freeroll, I'm going to do so as if I could be doing something else and making something (whether it be money, happiness, memories, improving my business.....whatever you could be "making" with that time). Someone else said it's a mindset. And it is.

treat them as a training field. yes, you wil get badplayers, but you will get good players as well. just as in some high roller you will see uber-agro players and uber-nits. play accoringly

One aspect to remember is that at freebies you see the same names, players, so if you rely on notes, etc, that might matter to see how loose the competition is, and which names you will most likely see towards the end of the tourney.
