I was wondering how long a poker session takes for an average to good player.

For me not more than an hour . I play 2-3 sessions a day. Tournaments does not count but i do not play too many SNGs during the time i play in a tournament.

I work during the day like 9 hours and i play poker in the afternoon after i rest 2-3 hours . In weekends i play4-5 sessions but i cannot play more than an hour a time.

I am making this thread because as a beginner i want to know if in time i will be at my best more than an hour a session.

It varies for me. I actually prefer the days when I can go for 12hrs.+ (when I have the time). Otherwise (when I'm playing) I'll likely play two sessions, one in the morning & then one at night or late afternoon stretching into the late evening. < this is for MTT play & MTT/SNG. I'll load up 4 -6mtt's & then add one on after an hour if I bust out of any of them. If I bust out of another I'll add a couple of MTT/SNG until I'm out of the last one.

THen it's a break for a few hrs. - nap, exercise, etc. THen back at it again.. pretty much the same thing.

Also, I find I can actually play better once I get into a good groove & this actually sometimes happens for me at around the 6hr. mark. Going deep in a Tourney or two just sorta seems to have this effect on me where I feel wide awake and time just flies by ("what?.. we're at 5th break already?")

Up until a month or two ago, I had only been playing 1-2 hours at a time in micro cash games. Now I try to get in a thousand hands each day which takes about 3-4 hours with 4 tables open. I think it is a matter of just doing it and conditioning yourself to play longer hours little by little. Besides that, it's a matter of making sure you are comfortable (full stomach, not tired, etc.) and enjoying playing the game. With a full time job, of course, there is a limit to the hours you can put into poker without stretching it.

I play micro cash games. I focus more on the number of hands than the number of hours. This varies based on how I am feeling on a given day and how many tables I can play that day. On a weekend when I am rested and have time to focus I can play more tables and get in more volume in less time.

I play the micro SNG which takes about an hour and then the freerolls here take a bit longer.

It very much depends on if my wife at home. For me it's very easy: If my wife at home - I'm not playing. If she is'nt at home - I'm playing untill she come back.

I like to play short sessions frequently taking a small break in between them. I usually play about 250-300 hands in a session (playing 2-3 tables at a time).

This helps me to relax and regroup. I then try to identify my bigger mistakes by doing a hand history review on the hands I either lost the most money on or have taken a note of during the session.

I might make an exception if there are two big fish sitting on my right and I'm winning more than usual. Most of the time I just sit out and continue playing with them upon my return

When I'm trying to implement a new concept that I have just started to study, I will play a longer single table session and take note of all the hands where I used that concept.

Ha ha ha ha.... this is the best ^ (I like the 'sig.' too)

A friend of mine, his session starts once his wife falls asleep.

At my place, my wife/partner plays more than I do.. by far.

I am the same way...it depends on the old lady. She likes my attention when we are home together. When I do play, I usually will sit for 4-5 hours with 2-3 tables open. It also depends on if I am hitting good or not.

Seeing a common theme here. Note too self:

Find poker playing partner or one that works all the time.

These new sng tournaments I'm playing require 4hrs of my time. I don't like to start one while in the middle of another but I will start two up at the same time. I will sometimes play until the wee hours of friday night saturday morning if I'm able.

I try to keep my sessions short too. I play mainly small field (<300 player) tournaments, so usually my sessions run 2-4 hours.

It depends, my mtt-sessions = 12 hours or so, my 180man sessions = 4 hours. If it´s possible, make some breaks in between to continue with your a-game. Cashgame is very nice, you can leave and sit down whenever you want, but i like the competition more :)

I usually play 1-3 sessions in a day, and they lasts 1-4hours. It usually depends how good i'm playing, I get unfortunately very fustrated when I lose, but I'm clever enough to stop playing.
