Hi there im a relatively new poker player, ive played 2 live tournaments overall and i was just wondering how long people had played live poker tournaments before they started to cash. Ive played online poker abit and with friends and stuff before. i came like 4th bottom the first time i played but came 20th out of 70 something players tonight. I really enjoy it and I can see where im making mistakes and where i can improve but i dont want to keep wasting my money on tournaments when im not even breaking even.

Depends on the player. If you are not good at poker it may be a very, very, very long time before you cash.

If you are exceptional you could win the next tournament you play in!

Or the converse could be true. You could be exceptional and not win for a very, very, very long time or be bad and win your next tournament.

What I can tell you, is that if you focus on learning how to play well, studying and trying to determine what your weaknesses in your tournament game are, then you will start to cash in tournaments often enough to be profitable.

2 Tournaments is not enough to have a good feel for what you are doing. You really will need to play more to have a better understanding of that. I don't play much in the way of tournaments, but I know that 2 is too small a sample size.

The most important factor you can learn in tournament poker is patience in my oppinion.

by being a patient player , utilise playing position, playing a standard small ball strategy on occasion to pick up pots also being in those extra pots can sometimes pay off....
those are usually the tournaments you get real deep.

yea but in general patience and composure will get you the cashes.
the biggest mistake I see is players get a pocket pair or players get a strong hand and strategy goes out the window.

its Important even holding a good hand to assess the risk factors and stack sizes flops and the amount of players in the hand.

If you gamble and flip to often you will cash less than if you play effiecient and selective with your spots and chips

it depends. You should read and watch videos about poker, it was important to you because you question it is a litle bit confused to me because doesnt make sense. You need to start for the beggining a learn about poker and then you will see results but first learn and play learn and play ...

Totally depends on the situation. The thing with tournament poker is, the element of luck plays a bigger factor than in cash games and therefore is very volatile. Cash games - you make the right play every time, in the long run you'll win money. Tournament poker....you can make the right moves all day long and be out in an instant and there goes your buy in. It is highly volatile. However, it can be a huge score if you win one.

Tournament poker is about being patient, observant and picking your spots to make moves (steal pots/blinds, etc.) I love Dan Harrington's series on tournament poker. If you're just starting out, I'd take a look at those. If nothing else, it will give you a perspective on what other seasoned players are doing. You may win one of your first tournaments and then not cash again for several. You may not cash for several and then go on a burner and cash in a bunch and win one or two.

I been cashing allot now and only play MTT and this are my first 2 months I don't cash big but making the bubble was my first worry for the past weeks

If you can play some decent poker and are bnot afraid to drop AA or another premium hand instead bluffing them straight on the start than you might get far enough each time

Everyone decides for himself when he cashed. I always put a definite purpose - and go for it. And after removing immediately buy this goal.
Problem - if you can call it - cashing money is that it is another factor that slows down the growth of your bankroll. But if you've already accepted the fact that you are in poker for a long time, the additional delay caused by the fact that you get something "real" for their efforts probably will not upset you.

This is a very hard question. Mistakes a made all the time and before you win more then you lose it will cost money to play tournaments with buy in.

I am also new into the world of poker and I play only tournaments with micro buy ins.

And I play a lots of freeroll. Its free and pays for the micro buy ins.

That way I dont waste money until I know what to do to win money.

thanks for all your replies, big help and really appreciated. Im currently a student studying financial maths and have had a dissertation to hand so i havnt been playing much up until last friday when it was handed in since. Since i decided to take it online for a few games and won my first tournament on poker start taking over 500 dollars so my patience has paid off. Im taking 300 dollars out, and i was wondering what kind of games people would suggest i invest in with the other 200. Do i continue playing in tournaments with 180 people like i won my fist one, or do i try and play some cash games as some people have suggested earlier in the thread?

I'd suggest sticking with one format for awhile before switching it up to something else (ie. play cash or MTT, not both).

Dont Play live games till you feel completely confident of doing so .. grind online games 1st. Play only same game like sng of certain field or cash for Long time , so that you will ve experience of winning and that confidence will make most of your positive games in live

I second that! There are so many freerolls offered by every poker client, that when you're learning you really don't need to invest your own money right away.
