Are you playing differently than you would normally play, due to circumstances at the table that either are emotional in nature (geez, can't believe he played that crap and won) or because the way the table is behaving is confusing you into making abnormal plays? If your answer is "Yes", you're on tilt.

If or any reason you are nervous, mad, upset, in a hurry, any type of non-relaxed state, you can start to make quick plays with out first thinking about why you are making it. Maybe try to ALWAYS wait, regardless of what you want to do. If you want to raise, ask yourself what you think you will accomplish by raising. If you want to call, ask yourself what you think you will accomplish by calling. Ask yourself what the next move your opponent is likely to make based on what you do now. Take time to think about what the answers to these questions are. Request extra time to think this through. Get into this habit, and if you find yourself not able to wait, stop playing till you get back in control. If you cannot do this, you are tilting a need a break.

And tilting does not always start at the tables. I have had arguments with my wife and had it affect my playing, so never sit at a table after any kind of altercation, unless you are soothed by it, which you probably are not.....

You start having cynical thoughts like "This is so stupid and unfair. I'm just going to shove."

You start making your wishes your thoughts, like "It sure would be great if this middle pair held up, so I'm going to act as if it might and shove."

Lots of reckless betting and shoving when you are on tilt basically, that and your equity drops like the stock market in 2008.

Fortunately I've realized my tilting symptoms are in my face and not so subtle.

Signs I'm tilting:

- I start calling someone a donk for slow playing their flopped nuts against my top pair, trips, or AA while I keep betting like a fat kid going back for seconds at a buffet.

- I start cursing at the computer about how rigged this website is and how stupid plays get rewarded by the rigged website.

- I start cursing at the computer for not giving me (insert card here) when every other idiot at the table gets exactly what they need on the river to take down a massive pot.

- I start shoving my shrinking stack all in with anything because "the donks get rewarded for donk shoves, so I should get some once in a while"

Stupid yes...glaringly obvious....yes.

Tilting was a major issue with my play and it still is to this day but I'm better at dealing with it. The way I deal with it is when I realize I'm not playing with the right mindset, I just stop. To be a good player, I believe you have to have discipline for yourself. You need to have the ability to walk away when you're not playing your game. It's the equivalent of just giving your money away.

If I'm playing a MTT, I'll play one at a time, usually. That way, when I get screwed, I don't have to worry about continuing to play with the wrong mindset. If I'm multi-tabling single table SNGs, I play out the tables then walk away. When I'm done, I go out and smoke a cigarette and that helps me take my mind off it. I'm not saying to start smoking if you don't but just walk away.

Sometime you should literally just catch yourself getting pissed, stop, take a deep breath and talk out loud to yourself. Then walk away. Sit out a couple hands.

I always found that I felt like I was playing a computer game and not with real people. I worked my way out of that mindset.

Good luck!

If you can lose your bankroll in one session, you're either ignoring major warning signs or playing above your bankroll.

Make it standard that if you ever open up a table above your limit, you're on tilt and you have to stop playing.
Set a stop loss.

but the thing is how can i identify it and hit the brakes? I am not in control when tilting.
You've got to change that. No one can stop your tilting but you.
If it's really that bad then consciously think through your decisions "utg KJo, bottom of my range but standard raise" "he hasn't been floating enough to double barrel with this few outs" etc, don't just mash buttons.

Playing on tilt is like yelling at your wife to get her to love and respect you more. It's probably not going to get the results you are hoping for.

Then you know how to identify it. The second you stay in a hand with cards you wouldn't normally play, the second you just call with crap or shove with not much just because you feel like you are being pushed around -- get away from the table. Chill out. (If you are in a tourney, sit out for a few minutes and go do something else, if your stack will permit.) When you come back, tighten up hard. You will feel comfortable again soon and then you can get back to playing appropriately.

Only you can control you. You need to learn how, or you will be the redeposit king.

Never have all your money on any table. Ever. Use BRM. If you never put your roll at risk, you will never lose it all. C'mon, you know that.

And upping the level after a loss is the exact wrong thing to do. Go down a level or two until you get your composure back.

BTW -- sounds like you are on tilt right now. Take a break. Talk to yourself about discipline and patience. And vow to never whine.

really? I keep thinking the louder I yell, the better she will understand me, she just isnt listening.....

Its all making more sense now...... lol,

Seriously tho, thats actually a good analogy. I just stop when I am tilting.

The twelve steps to getting off tilt

Step one: Realize when you are on tilt (Kinda like the Alcoholics anonymous thing of realizing you actually have a problem is the most important first step, cause only then can you act on it)

Step two : Turn your PC OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Step 3: uhhhhh, anything but poker, really.....

Step 4: Drink, eat, go swimming, play with your kids, go to work, fix the car, watch a movie, post in CC, anything but poker, really....

Step 5: Repeat step 4

Step 6,7,8,9,10 : Repeat step 5 ( these steps can vary as far as time limit goes, keep repeating them if 10 is not enough)

Step 11 ; read a book or article on whatever poker you play

Step 12 : Play a game and be ready for step one at any time.....

My suggestion is to make yourself a checklist to go over before you play. This could be the first game of the day or right after a previous game. Ask questions like:

1. Am I in the right poker mentality? Am I angry/upset at anything that might hinder my decisions and how I play? Will a bad beat cause me to blow up or will I be able to work past it?

2. How am I feeling today? Am I happy and ready to win or have I been feel down/angry/upset?

3. Will I be able to give my full attention to the game(s) I am playing? Do I have enough time to play?

4. Am I playing with the intent to win? Or am I just playing to kill time? If I'm just playing to kill time is there anything else I could/should be doing?

...Or anything similar. Just to see if you're in the right mood/mentality to play.

I read a relatively useless online poker book, but what good information was in there, Philthy just summed up.

Just as an aside, cause since you said painkillers, so it is obviously not taken recreationaly, but pills, pot, alcohol, its all gonna have an effect on anything you do, so definitively a good idea to be strait and focused if your goal is to win. (yes, I am also speaking from experience)

Some people just wanna play and can afford to lose, so they dont care what their sobriety level is. Those are the tables you want to sit at.......

When your ego takes over, you don't recognize you are being out-skilled, you
fail to realize the flow of good cards has moved to other players.

Another thing is check and see how many hands you're playing. Generally when you're on tilt, you're playing way too many hands.
