I guess the worst approach is to try the costly stakes you can afford and take a look how will it go. A player who is a bit more serious about his aspirations and aims will try more sophisticated approach. Please guys (or girls) post your used methods of LEARNING poker.

The way I find most effective is to write down my own mistakes, observations and conclusions, based on my own experience. This is the most effective way for me and it is not costly for micro stakes. I have made a special notebook in nice handwriting where I write down all important conclusions and calculations on which they are based.

Reading a book or watching a course, of course, is also helpful, but personally I do not use these that much. Personal mistakes are my best coach.

I read books, read CC posts, watch Poker on TV and watch a little online (e.g., the final table replays on PS). I practice as much as I can find the time for, and use hand replay and odds calculator tools after every big hand that I've played to try to either learn from my mistake, or to confirm that I did everything correctly.

I haven't tried KidPoker's approach of commuting back and forth between Toronto & Vegas, but who knows - if I ever get good enough (and that's a big 'if') I may add that to my toolkit as well.

I found that working with better players works best for me, i also tend to record the sweat sessions i have and watch them later. I have never liked watching coaching videos or similar stuff, i love to discuss hands and read books more than watching vids, i get bored fast with vids

I would label myself as a beginner. I have been playing for awhile, and I have just been hitting the tables (mostly small stakes and freerolls), as you notice you start just really cleaning up at a certain spot, bump up the stakes. Take TV poker with a grain of salt, most usually show the big hands, so when you a guy make a move on another and get burned, there's usually a back story to it

For me, I have started reading books and watching micro stakes videos from much better players and have been practicing a lot. Start with play money low stakes and work your way up to the high stakes, only moving up when you can consistently win on a decent basis. The problem is that the books and videos don't really train you for this type of poker as it is quite different to real stakes. But by this time you'll probably be ready for the lowest real stakes and the books would have prepared you to not at least bleed chips. If you have practiced enough I'm sure you would be able to at least remain neutral.

SNG's have been really helpful for me too, purely because if you enter the same stakes SNG each time, it's really easy to analyse your success over multiple games by making a graph of various aspects of the tournament. Likewise, you can try new strategies over a batch of games and plot to see its efficacy.

previously I had read some books back when I played limit. Now I've been listening to podcasts or watching training videos with occasional article reading. I try to study something a couple days a week mixed in with playing so I can try to use and understand the concepts before I forget them or they blur in with the other things. I think about hands after playing but I could definitely use some better hand analysis after.

Part black jesusie - I turn, I consider that the best science is, however, a game in real money - but with the decision of dedicating some kind of sum set aside a month and takes care of his bankroll-it may be for example, 20 percent of your incomes and playing a lot of freeroli - use of wins and collection and take points and an exercise of their skills and analizing competition various league - a simple example of the field to the exercises is an open league and premier league at poker stars - I also probible still in the championship polish open freerolls to play at 888 poker - these are my brief observations as play -
*You can also lead balance sheet in a workbook with specific victories and achievements - can lead his personal notebook noting the players - and make your personal manager of players and describe them and assign them colors over time after half a year, after year we have a kind of database players as they are playing and what you expect from them
*So in short describes my advice
*I hope that something nasunolem any thoughts you black jesusie :)) hehehehh
;) :D

I found that i learned the most by recording my sessions in Pokertracker or Holdem Manager (whatever floats your boat), and reviewing the sessions played (or let them be reviewed).
This may and will point out vulnerable plays and leaks, and then you can take steps to plug those leaks.
Start at a low limit, so you can afford to make mistakes (you'll have to take the donkeys with it :))

I learned the basics with books (Small Stakes Hold'em by Ed Miller, David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth in particular - I started as a limit player), and improved primarily through poker forums and discussing poker with better players.

Exchanging sessions with a poker buddy (so he can review yours and you can review his and you can both discuss the reviews further) helps a lot (or similar: sweat sessions!), as does posting your trouble hands in a hand analysis thread on a forum. But above all: responding to other people's hands in hand analysis threads on a forum!!!
If you respond to others, explaining your reasoning in full, then you easily expose the strenghts and weaknesses of your play, and fellow forumers can then point those out. If you're open to critique, you'll improve a LOT this way.
And for maximum effect, you should reply to other people's hands without reading any of the other replies first (as those might cloud your judgment).

I think the mainly point is to teach yourself from your own mistakes, not to do same mistake every dam* time. May the river be with you.

THanks to moving my thread to the appropriate section. I realized my mistake as soon as I posted but there was nothing else I could do

I started with books and pravticing same time. Books give good background knowledge but only practice gives you knowledge to make right decicions in rigt moment. .. I'm still beginner but that's my oppinion.

A combination of study and playing works best. Study is the classroom, the poker table is the lab.

Figure out how you learn best and go with it. I started with some online videos put on by pros which got me past basics and into thinking about certain spots, read a few books, and keep notes on my play so I can go back (off the table) and figure out how to avoid mistakes and what works well. I still go looking for videos at least a few times per month, because as I get better I realize I still have a lot to learn :) . Bottom line is do what works for you. Gl!
