1 rebuy at the start(I like playing with a double stack :))
If i get knocked out i will do one double rebuy but not if i got knocked out because bad play by me.
I allways addon.
My strategy is basicly to play really tight during the rebuy period but when i have a hand im gonna play i raise alot more then i whould in normal freezout since there are so many people that play like a maniac and dont mind calling alot bigger raises

Note that this will usually require you to spend 5 times the original buy-in.

Re-buy's require a lot of self discipline. It is not unusual to watch somebody spend 10-16 buy-ins, before the add-on at the break.

Of all the strategies I have tried, (I have tried all the major strategies) I prefer the one where I get cards early and don't have to even add-on.

Rebuys are best done during a hot streak.

Most of the time i only use 3xbuy-ins but yeah dj is right if your rolled for a 5$ freezout it doesnt mean your rolled for a 5$ rebuy.
I allways look at this way: a 3$rebuy is really a 9$ mtt.

I concur completely.

Playing tight solid hands durring the first hour will net you the chips from the very loose players. On good days you can be so far ahead you don't even need to add on at the first break (though I still might do one rebuy at this time depend on my stack).

The way I see it is that if my play is so bad I need to rebuy durring the first hour it's time for me to log off. If I'm out due to some rediculous chasing by a villian I'll stay though knowing they'll be easy fodder latter in the game.

i guess overall you get to play a bit more loose during re buy period especially if you are considering rebuying... i mean it doesnt mean call anything with A 8 or anything but in situations where you are racing.. you are more willing to commit your chips cause its not for tournament life.. if you get unlucky just re buy...

Also, if you bust out late, you should be less inclined to rebuy, since you'll have less time to take advantage of the loose play during the rebuy period.

The strategy is to have at least 5x the starting stack by the time the rebuy period ends. So if you rebuy immediately (start with a double stack), double up off a loose idiot, and then add on, you will have reached that 5x starting stack marker. The closer you get towards the end of the rebuy period without reaching that mark, the more inclined you should be to gamble & make marginal plays. (By marginal, I don't mean crazy).

dble buy-in. You don't want to get short changed when you double up. Tighten up your raising hands, but loosen up you're all-in calling hands. It's amazing what hands get shoved. Don't hesitate to get it all-in with AQ or AJs. If you've got the chips call any normal raise from late position and go to town with any top pair. Look for the re-buy mad men and check raise the living hell out of them. And always, always add-on. There's no such thing as enough chips.

It obviously depends on the level and how many rebuys you're comfortable with, but I think double buyin at the beginning is a must if you're serious and committed about the tournament. If it's a massive field with crazy amounts of rebuys you're gonna need to pick your spots and play that game as well, but in smaller ones sometimes just having a little bit more than your starting (double) stack and an addon is perfectly playable post rebuy hour.

I usually play at FT 0.10 buy in with 0.50 re-buy,I never re-buy till the break....not that I have no money,I want to push myself hard,to focus on my game without any chips added.Few times I did finished in the money!
But,of course this is low cash tourney,on big ones 2-3 rebuys are a must + add on.

I am no poker expert by any means but I play it really tight for the first hour. Seems to me that some people have money to burn in re-buys and will push on almost every hand. I do however re-buy right away to give myself a bit of a cushion to play tight. Once the re-buy and add-on are over I tend to relax a bit and play a bit more aggresive.

I tried one rebuy and hated it. The play was wild. People were all in with 7-2; Busted; REBUY. It was not fun poker. You've given me a new perspective. Re-Buy early, then play tight. Your good hands will usually be paid handsomely.

i play loose in the start and try to get as many chips as possible. i mean if you get sucked out on the loss isnt that bad because you dont invest too much time in it. i mean its better than playing too tight and getting killed by the blinds after hours of play.

You really don't have to loosen up all that much, if at all. In fact, just the opposite. Since everyone else is thinking the same way, your preflop raises don't carry the same puch as they do in a freezout.

Re-Buys are all about finding the right opportunities to double up. When you raise from early position, you give anyone with a pocket pair or Ax to come over the top. AND THEY WILL! I'd suggest only raising from EP or MP with hands you're comfortable calling an all-in with. ATo doesn't cut it.

If your patient the time will come. Rarely have I played one of these where I haven't had at least one or two chances to double up with the best of it. It doesn't always come through for me, but that's when the re-buy comes in; but the point is, YOU decide the time and place, not the re-buy madman.

To tell you the truth, depending on the stakes of the tournament, Play it like it was a normal tournament that if you lose you lose. ALso make sure that you know that alot of people are gonna be playing loose so dont hesitate to go all in preflop with a good hand or raise it big. Most rebuy tournaments i play i never rebuy or add on. Unlest its that satellite with 35 people on fulltilt but you get my point. GL on ur next rebuy tournament.

I remember I always had bad luck playing rebuys. It seems like I would rebuy 2-3 times and end up losing just short of the cash in the end anyways.

Personally I prefer to just play without rebuying. I treat it as a simple do-or-die and it helps me to play more focused and disciplined. If I lose, then I lose, and try my best again next time.

Double buy-in from the start - play hard with any pocket pair, suited connectors, AK - A10, the reason why is you want as many chips on your table as possible. The more chips that are on your table the better. Even if you rebuy several times those chips are still on the table. I play tighter half way through the rebuy period. Always add-on. If your playing MTT Rebuy then you'll need a lot of chips once the tables start breaking. Trust me one thing I'm good at is rebuys. If your table is chip dead you'll have no chance once the tables break. Just play smart poker. Rebuy doesn't mean all-in pre-flop it means your most likely willing to play bigger pots with drawing hands. Basiclly it's an implied odds game. If I hold 8h7h I will be willing to call or even make a large pre-flop bet. During the rebuy period I'm OK with playing a large pot with 7h8h cause if I make a hand and he has any part of that hand then I'm most likely getting paid off. If I don't get paid off I can get away from it and then wait for another chance at a large pot. Especially in multi way pots. If you hold anything with potential in a rebuy and there is a raise and a call (or 2) always call. Even if you think your crushed you could make your hand and get a crap load of chips, if your comitted to rebuy X # of times or less than committ some chips to a multi-way pot or call a large raise with a drawing hand. Try it out at the lower stks. Big times pro's will rebuy 20+ times or more. They must know something they are professionals at what they do. The more chips on your table + skill = you with a big chips stk. Playing tight during rebuys is for inferior players that know they need good cards and good flops. Good players need to and should play more hands than worst players. Good players should be able to win pots when someone doesn't have a hand, win pots when they make hands, and get away from hands when thier beat. During the rebuy period you can take more chances and trust your reads more. If your wrong you can rebuy and now there are more chips on the table that a skilled player can win.

I always raise big with a good hand at the start, or go all in. You need to collect as many chips as possible and later i play normal poker. Be a litle bit aggresive and let the others think I bluff all the time till I fish them:p

REbuy ear'y and often if your pocket and the rules allow. Watch the payout though you do not want to be in for more than 15% of the final payout for first.

im the kind of person who likes to not rebuy at all..... nothing feels better than taken down a huge win for minimum investment...try to play your strongest hands the first hour... and unload after that....this may not work for you ....but it has worked for me a few.... gl and see you at the felt

wow - great thread. After reading some tips yesterday, I tried my first go at a re-buy tourny. First I won a .20/.02 satellite to get into the 5k tourney. Pretty weird too since it was a ss stack and we only started with 100 chips!

Anyway, I was totally lost in the re-buy. I honestly didn't have a strategy worked out. I saw all sorts of folks loading up before the tourney even started and thought "hmmm, what the heck should I do? After I won an all-in early on, I did finally do a double reload, but it seemed that the number of ppl still in the tourney kept growing - not shrinking! That was sort of dis-heartening. While I did not make the money, I got pretty close for my first go and it only cost me $2.22. I consider it a cheap investment for the experience.

However, that said - now that I've got a little more insight from y'all - perhaps I'll be able to incorporate these tips into my own winning strategy and next time - watch out!

Thanks again for the posts, this was a real mystery to me.

I hate REBUY tournaments, but when I do play them I play so tight that Bush and Palin would shake their heads about how conservative i am. After the rebuys end I will loosen up a bit depending on the table

I'm with you on this one. I generally don't do rebuys. If I wanted to do rebuys like the example above of $3 x 3 = $9MTT, the $9 game is what'd play. When I do play them, it's one buy-in and if I make it that far, the add-on at the break.

After watching rebuy tournies, I think of them as freerolls on steroids.
