So! It's a commodity that is required in plentiful supply to play poker. Sometimes you have it and other times you don't. Sometimes, having had it you lose it, for a variety of reasons.

I'm talking of course about patience.

It may be that you have set your self up to play a tourney and after an hour or so being card dead, your focus starts to wane and you start thinking of ways of pushing the play a bit. One or two hands later, during which time your plays have not paid off, your patience is taking a serious dent. It may also be that having decided to play tight in the first rounds of a tourney and even though you play perfectly, your plays have not held up and you are haemorrhaging chips. Your patience is suffering .

What I'm wondering is how do you deal with the loss of patience. Do you have any coping strategies that others may be able to learn from, or have you got funny (maybe not so funny at the time) stories from which we can learn a little more.

I would love to hear what you can offer in this important subject, especially for beginners.

Thanks

Everyone deals with the loss of focus differently, especially playing online. I do a couple of things that work for me but ultimately one needs to find what works for themselves.

I'll play standing up for 20-30 mins and then sit down. Even if i fold, fold, fold, I'll still stay standing, and then sit for a similar length of time. This way I break my session up into smaller chunks, and i find that the change feels like a fresh start.

I have chips in hand while I play online partly to simulate playing in a casino but partly because it holds my attention because that's how I'm wired.

I always take 5 mins every 60-90 mins to give my eyes a rest. They have to have a break from the glare of your monitor.

What you shouldn't do in my opinion is have things like the TV on, or surfing the web, etc. Anything to pull your attention away from the people at your table is going to get you in trouble later.

during a tournament I look up and do something else, listen to music, touching the cell, occupying the mind with something else because if you do not control your patience will play with emotion and this long-term will be bad

Hi Bentley Boy:

I am a Begginer, when I loose patiente i just can`t deal easy, most of the times I enter with All In and get Tilted, specially when I playing tight and came the AA or Ak and I loose the pot.

It happens a few days I get 2 Bad Beats in 2 different MTT, and it happens simultaneous, one I was bust, the other I loose a pretty Stack and committed all the tournament, both of them was really near of the money, so was even worst:

My dogs even run with the rage, no warm make to them off couse but they get scare, I get a Bottle of Brandy and drink an double shot of it. It works pretty well the second one I went till the FT..

But most of the time I can`t deal with it

This is a very common problem that many even the greats of the game deal with sometimes. It can happen for anyone of the reasons you have mentioned and even more, both having to do with the game and because of things outside the game.

For me I need to be sleeping good, eating healthy, exercising regularly and studying the game to show up and play well. And in that order of importance for me.... Everyone is a lil different tho. This is the foundation of having the best chance to play well and stay focused.

Even with that tilt can happen.... The first thing that is vitally important to correct it is recognizing when its happening! Just like any problem identifying it is the first step.

We identified it now what..... This varies depending on the situation so first lets talk about being at home playing online. I might turn on some music, sitout even in a tournament just long enough to take a quick walk around the house and take a few breaths and remind myself I need to play solid if u want a shot to win. If someone is around to talk a specific hand over with I may do that but that's not always an option.

Now if its a live tournament I may do all those same things and I also include a at the table deep breath meditation technique. Breath in for a count of 7 hold for a count of 5 and exhale for a count of 11. Repeat this a few times and as often as needed. You will be surprised how well this works in game and for stressors outside the game to.

I also can't recommend these books enough, Jared Tendler "The Mental Game of Poker" both volumes.... Get them! Read them and take notes on them as you read. They have great potential to change your psychology both on and off the felt.

Good luck and keep at it!
