How do you deal with the donk bet?

You know the types. You're the one who raises preflop, you get 1-2 callers as per usual, then the flop comes and someone leads out before action gets to you.

This donk bet to me is a huge tell, theyve hit the board, but how hard? This is where I get a bit iffy. I only ever call if I had a decent hand obviously, but should you reraise here ? Or should you only reraise with the nuts / 2nd nuts?

Is the donk bet a sign of a bluff? Or someone whos hit but is scared to see a turn card? This is a technique that utterly annoys me when someone does it, every single time and I need to deal with it a bit better. Any advice appreciated.

In my experience (but I could very well be wrong here), if it's HU on the flop and they donk into you, they have a decent hand but like to know where they're at. Most of the time they're bet/folding, so you should consider calling them with a good hand and then raising the turn, or just raising here with a bad hand.

I have also seen a lot of bet/folds in this situation; whenever I've seen a bet/large call, they seem to showdown a drawing hand.

What about when there's 3-4 people in the hand? Someone who acts before you (you're the original raiser), bets out on the flop. I see people doing this alot and it seems the ones who always do this actually have a hand. The ones who do this rarely do it because they want to steal etc

If we have a decent hand Reraise.
Therefore, if we have not a decent hand will usually be our best way to maximize the value of that hand in the showdown and call down. when we have some equity or search the Draw if we get the right odds. Otherwise we will simply fold. No need to complicate it.
