How do you avoid going on tilt? I sometimes stop it and sometimes it just gets to me. What are your strategies in avoiding this?

Bad beats happen over and over. My tip is: Leave the room for a while and get you some water. Keep in mind that you are the better player! Sooner or later your opponent will loose money and goes broke.

I try to just understand low percentage plays and streaks of those plays are bound to happen and just try to tunnel on making good plays.

I stop it by telling myself that I last longer when I am a coward and out quickly when I am brave.

Best way to do that is just to get up and take a break. Get some fresh air and refocus your mind and then go back and grind

Everyone else has already said it, but I'll try a different way. Understand the odds. Even when you are a "heavy favorite" in poker, it's usually not more than an 80% favorite. So, 1/5 times you will lose. Most times, even as a "favorite" it's even lower than that.

Further, you have to understand that the odds even out over an infinite number of hands. "One night of playing" is not "the long run". Even a month of playing isn't long enough to see a true statistical outcome.

Combine that with the fact that people seldom remember the 4/5 when they DID win. They remember the 1/5 losers. And take them harder. They also don't remember when THEY won with the "2 outer". Only when they lost that way.

Remember, there are ALWAYS short-term anomalies, in person, online... ALWAYS.

I control putting in my mind that poker is a long-term game, so I'm more patient to bad beats , coin flips lost , because I know that if I play the right way the results will come

Try to think in the "long therm" when you get a badbeat or something.
Most of players just think in the "short therm" after winning a hand played horrible in all the streets...
So my advice is still playing the good way and always thinking in the long therm :)
You can also try breathe deeply 5 minutes when the tilt is ON :)

Bad beats will happen, when they do try not to think "I'll get it back next hand'' Every hand should be played on it's own. That desire to 'win back' a bad beat almost always results in tilting.

I in my humble opinion I believe that a poker player , or better all poker player goes on tilt and is inevitable, since the circumstances of the game can take you to that, either a bad hand some sin playing with anything when you try to play well , a distraction for me are everyday things that can affect the concentration game grabbing hands and losing the ability to cope with situations poniendonos in erroneous decisions that cost us a lot.

In the old days when I was a total addict to poker I constantly went on tilt destroying 2 keyboards and 3 mice in the process.
Today, I no longer tilt as I have come to realise that I cannot win every hand and that even though if it looks like I am a favourite to win the hand, I can get out flopped at any time. Now even though I am not happy being out flopped usually on the river I have come to accept it as part of the game.
Eperience and the cost of buying new equipment, usually more expensive than the buy in fee for a tourney has taught me that.
Good luck in your own endevours to try and get past it.

Change your view. When something that happens that normally puts you on tilt, type a whole bunch of curse words and stuff into the chat window. So that people know you are (theoretically) on tilt. But now realize that instead of tilting you have a weapon. Your image is that of a tilted player. If you play smart you can make moves that look reckless but are very calculated. Being aware of how other players perceive you is very powerful.

Also, what is putting you on tilt? Over the course of a day I'll lose 5-6 buy ins, and usually over stupid stuff like people calling when they have no reason to and getting a suck out. But losing pots is part of the game. It's nothing to tilt over.

My issue is boredom tilt. I can't play just one table at a time, it's too darn slow and I start doing weird shit that works out well on a good day and ends really badly on a not so good day.

Controlling Tilt

I seem to go through spells of massive tilt. it tends to manifest itself in tourney play when it close to the bubble. More to the point when my all in has been called by really inferior holdings and I get shafted. I tend to freak out for at least half hour. So my question is this, how do you cope with a gut busting suck out close to the bubble???? I really cant affords to throw another laptop across the room and I defo cant afford the type of therapy I most probably need...lol.. Any free help would be appreciated.:)

There is really no need to throw a new laptop when you can easily throw the old one as much as you like.

try to approach the game as long-term investment , play with bankroll management , and play the maximum possible tables, because the more you play ( play well ) will result more and will learn to overcome suck outs and bad beats

You just have to put up with the thing that poker is game of luck. You should play your AA game and don't worry when bad beats happen.
And if you can't overcome this I advise you to play chess. It's a game of skill.

Best advice is to forget bad beats and move on as soon as possible. There is next to no need to review bad beats where you were sucked out on. You played it to the best of your ability and lost due to lucky suckout. Forget it ever happened.

It's advisable that you have a program that takes care of your stats. There are some paid ones, like holdem manager or poker office, but there are some OS variants as well, less graphic, but still effective to keep track of your behavior when playing.

Making sure you don't play more hands than needed, seeing what your aggression factor is, % of hands lost at showdown and plenty of others make it easier to realize your condition.
My advice is that once you're aware of it, take a break and blow some steam - play a FPS, go to the gym or buy a punching bag :).

Also you can do therapy yourself, you don't need a specialist - everything you need to do is be honest about what you're going through and aware of your feelings. Once you've managed to pin-point what it is that you are feeling (anger, despair, frustration), determine what the cause is (showdown lost at river, higher flush, etc) and then rationalize it (finding an explanation, such as the fact that it can happen to anyone).

Going through this process will take off the edge, but also make you feel more in touch with yourself, thus, more in control of your actions. Being in control is a key factor when playing poker - winning or loosing happens either way.
