I've been a rec player for awhile but I just started to get serious about playing. I love the game itself and everything. I've read several of the big books on the game but I started playing on Bovada and I haven't made money since I started. I've been playing online for two weeks now and I've had some really bad beats. Should I keep practicing or take a few weeks off and study the game more?

Thanks for everyone who can help.

Welcome:
I agree with everything Wally informed you of, We all can learn something new everday. As for cashing in - why dont you look into the Pokere Strategy Section here at CC and see what can be added to your game. I also visit from time to time and pull info from it as well, again be patient and good luck to you.

Well, consider yourself lucky. There are a lot of players that lose their whole deposit within hours. Then rinse and repeat... So not being busto after 2 weeks and taking some "some really bad beats," isn't as bad as it may seem. Don't be results oriented, and try your best to make good decisions while playing. Bad beats happen, but good decisions and play is what will make you money in the long term. Continue playing as much as you can, and learn, learn, and learn some more. Be a sponge. Be willing and open to input form others. And most importantly, learn from mistakes by reviewing your hand histories. They say this game takes minutes to learn but a lifetime to master. I'm always trying and willing to learn, and feel like you (generalizing) learn a ton as you play. Best of luck in your journey to be the best player you can be.

You will not just get better by playing. Its not a game that works that way. Same as Chess. You read, you study, you calculate and the rest comes with experience. But experience on itself will not get you anywhere because as a new player you will make mistakes that you will not even spot and you will make them again and again until you realise it. The point in learning faster is having the desire to improve your game and that wont happen just with one question. Neither somebody here can teach you by himself. Your question should be much rather about what articles you should read, what books you should buy, than just how to become a better player. Poker doesnt work this way :)

The exact best recipe for improvement varies from player to player and can also be different at different times for a given player. So the trick is to find a balance that works well for you right now.

You do have to play, but play alone is certain to be less productive than mixing in study, both to learn more and to see how well you're actually implementing what (you think) you know. There's also the matter of what you should be learning and implementing at any particular time.

What have you read, and what are you trying to do with your game right now? In general, as a relatively inexperienced player, your best option is probably to learn to play a TAG style well enough to achieve at least a moderate win rate. This is the same whether you play MTT, STT, cash or a mix.

Its you yourself who can adjust to online poker. Just play and play and observe things that are usual. You said you read books already, so what lacks only is practice. Sometimes, online poker will contradict few of the theories and you have to observe it.

The great thing about Bovada is you get to see your opponents cards in the hand histories. I would take some time off and catch up on studying hand histories via Poker Tracker 4, or the free replayer at onlinepokermanager.com and use the notes feature to critique your play.

Be tough on yourself and make sure you are correctly distinguishing between bad beats and bad play (errors). Bad beats are actually ok as long as you played the hands properly.

Harrington on Holdem (cash or tourney, whichever you need) is a solid place to start for microstakes TAG play.

A poker player, is not the overnight, so everything takes time and perseverance, where if you are recreational player take it as a hobby and enjoy while you play, if you want to become a professional because, spend time study, analyze your errors yourself and see that you get your conclucion after doing so.

I was considering buying it because I like the coach and watched some of his training videos. I guess I will get to it soon seeing how its only $20 and I should earn that back and more assuming I learn anything  .

I know everyone is saying get books read and read but you can find everything you need here to improve your game. Proper brm is the key to improving in poker. I've won manytimes, study hard made huge profit in the past but only to screw it up with poor brm. How you ask, I got greedy move up in stakes where my bankroll does not support, then I tilt and well you know the rest. One of the reason I joined this site is to improve my brm and so far I've learned so much , I'm currently learning how to crush micro mtt right here on this site. Good luck

Yes and no. There's a lot of information here, yes. However, you are largely on your own to determine the quality of different advice you get. When you read books, there's less of a concern that what they tell you is bad or incorrect. Plus things are more likely to be presented with more supporting info and reasoning.

True but if you're just learning and looking to improve , if correctly used this site has all the info you need and books are not that necessary. There are members here who already read lots of books and already put those theories to test, why not learn from someone who already read the books and already have experience. However its a different story for advanced players.

In general books + this site will give you the best results. Books provide statistical data and facts/info about poker to help you make the right Decision and this site provides the experience info you need to improve. This site provides info on the end results of almost every poker scenarios so you can better analyze the data you learn in the books. Well atleast something like that not sure of it makes sense or not but Ultimately both are your tools for improving your game.

he important thing about this sport is to continue studying and playing consistently, since books give us a guide but the game teaches us daily, I think you should continue playing but not exaggerating or playing too much.

honestly If you don't feel that you are not that great of a player and need to get better, but want to do it without losing money. I would suggest finding a playmoney game with high level of compititon, Ok I know your thinking this is impossible lol....and it almost is. But I know of a few on pokerstars, for instance, the POKER SCHOOL ONLINE COMMUNITY home game club is a very good club to learn, play and improve your game. The play there is high quality and they take it seriously. Evryone is ranked there and playing for rank points, so there will not be players making stupid donk plays and shoving every hand like you often see in the pokerstars lobby games. I also know of some more home games club of the same caliber of play...if OP or anyone else would like to try these out post here and I will post the codes to get into the clubs. remember thee are Homegames cluns on PokerStars
