So, I've just managed to grind my $30 deposit back up to $250 for the millionth time through running well. I really do not know where to go from here as I have been at this very spot countless amounts of times after being up and down before hitting a few bad runs leading to tilt and busting my bankroll! I feel I am a decent player and win regularly although I have no plan as to actually use my bankroll properly and have no plan as to how I will make money consistently. I play $15 turbo sit n goes on pokerstars and have realised there is far too much variance for this to be profitable in the long term.

My first question is - how can I make a plan/strategy to make money consistently through poker? Which game types and stakes are best?

My second question - is there any strategies I can use to prevent myself from tilting and busting my bankroll after a bad beat?

Many thanks, Luke

Sit down and set guidelines for yourself, with $250 in your account you can comfortably play $2.50 180 mans, maybe even chuck in the odd $3.50 45 mans, mtts and sattelites up to $2.20.

As for your second question go into responsible gaming in the options and also set those limits above as your limits and that'll make it pretty hard to lose your roll when you do go on tilt

Grind away at those above guidelines until you hit say $450-500 then set new guidelines for yourself

This is the wall so many players - myself included - run into. I do not have an answer, otherwise I would be applying it to my own game, but I will make a few comments.

"I play $15 turbo sit n goes on pokerstars and have realised there is far too much variance for this to be profitable in the long term.

^^^ 250 is not a good BR for these games. You can easily go broke. As you said, variance is a bitch. I wont go into BRM here, but you should. I play MTT, STT and cash, and cash is IMO the better game if you understand it. The variance is not as soul crushing, but that is just my opinion. As toots touched upon above, you are playing way over your BR.

"how can I make a plan/strategy to make money consistently through poker? Which game types and stakes are best?"
^^The games you feel best in and are strongest at. You could read "Treat your poker like a business" That will give a lot of good pointers. If there was a plan/strategy to make money consistently, well, everyone would make money. This is also very contingent on you and how you play/what you play.

" is there any strategies I can use to prevent myself from tilting and busting my bankroll after a bad beat?"
Tilt has no plan. You have to have knowledge of what tilt means in your play, and you MUST recognize when you should not be playing. There is no one size fits all, tilt has many shapes and sizes.....

Assuming $250 is your entire bankroll, playing $15 games is insane...excusez le mot.
As for gametypes, well you know best yourself what fits you well.
When it comes to stakes....play stakes where you don't tilt after losing a few buyins or better said, stakes that don't hurt your emotions during a losing streak.

Than, a bad beat will only hurt you when you feel like you deserve to win.
Well, you don't unless your opponent draws dead....keep that in mind.
Still, with a roll of $250 a bad beat in a $15 game will make you feel terrible, while that same bad beat in a $2.50 game probably won't hurt you at all.
You just fire up another tournament.

Patience is key and if you are indeed a decent player, playing lower stakes will still make your roll grow.
It might make you feel bored, running it up slowly, but for all sake, if you do feel bored while playing, just take a break for a while, but never ever go playing higher stakes because you're bored.

I can only think of 2 reasons to play higher stakes.
First, when we managed to build a roll which suffices for the higher stakes.
Second, when we manage to win a satelite and just want to give it a shot.

And remember one thing.....nothing so frustrating as having to deposit again and again.
So treat your bankroll as something precious...after all, it's what you work with.

you would have to play at least input tables. I think 15 dollars is a lot to input the bankroll that you got. ideally play in entries is 10% is your bankroll as much. you would have to play well to care for the bankroll. a humble advice. regards

My advice to you is to check out all kind of games that the site offers,i mean holdem,omaha,badugi,2-7,etc.. sit'n go's,MMTS,short cash games, deep stack, zoom literally everything. And after you check them all try to find the game and limit that suits you, where you feel COMFOTABLE to play, this is the most important thing i think...and from there on i think you will run good.

NLHE is a million players with no advantage over anyone else. PLO has the most clueless players of any game. They play holdem hands and can't understand why they lose their stack. Learn the game and you will have an immediate advantage over half of the players.

I think decent players can play for money, but never win much or loose much. The pro's are walking away with the money, while you can play for years. Maybe you get lucky be winning a big tournament, after all poker is gambling :)

There is fish at every level of poker, but at the higher levels players are more aware of your motives. Firing a second barrel on the turn against a scarecard may work a lot of the time against some opponents at NL2 or NL5, but the higher stakes you get, the easier people will work you out and know that you will be bluffing in those spots. That's just example of course.

The key to winning is simple, improve your hand reading and you can beat any level. I suppose if you could see your opponents hole cards at all times you'd be able to win 9/10 tournaments you play correct? So this is your aim, my aim and every other players aim, to be able to distinguish our opponents hand to the closest we can. If you do this consistently you make money. Unfortunately, I'm not the best player, but I learn every day and try to improve my hand reading, and hopefully as time goes on I can read opponents more easily as each month passes.

This may sound like bs woo woo stuff, but meditation is becoming a more widely accepted practice, and it may really help keep you from tilting as hard. Zen, man. I suggest listening to some podcasts by Tim Ferriss on the subject matter.

As far as your bankroll management, I've tried to stay on track with having at least 100 buy-ins. If your play is solid, variance usually can't stand up to that standard. Good Luck!

Toots. that is the most common sense strategy that I have heard
