It is a well known fact that you must learn to read other players, and use this information to adjust your style of play. BUT, early in tournaments and when you sit down at tables, you are going to run into LOTS of players that you have no information on. I generally assume that they play logically, and if they are betting, they are betting depending on the value of their hand.

How do others classify unknown or new players when first sitting at a table?

LIVE:
You cant classify new players right away. It takes time.

You categorize players according to tells and their past plays.

ONLINE:
Classify new players right away if you have Ptracker/HM.

Very difficult to catorise players anyway. Early in tournament you must be ultra careful, also a good idea to assume players play the same as you, but the first thing I find to do is get to the river cheaply and see what they play with. i.e. may play AA slow or try to play with suited connectors? This could be a play that they my bring knowing that people are trying to find out how they play? As I said confusing at the start of a tourney, so play safely and tight unless you have the nuts then be aggressive !! gl...............:D:D:D

You cannot place an unknown in a known category. I mean, it is an unknown. Just play very straight forward vs. him/her till you get some info.

This is the first few things a player should have learned when starting out and should continue doing this every time they sit at a table . Time goes by and the more knowledge one has with experience this task comes quickly and with out thought. What i call having it in your back pocket. This is one of the big differences between having poker tracker and not having one. Makes plsying live tough if you use tracker when you play online alot.
I would say evaulate the table and start listing the players that are in hands as they play. Take notes and put in their styles and go from there. Basic notes at first then youll move on quickly ( you sound knowledgable ).
If your live bring paper and a pen , take notes. on line well put in notes in the note section just make sure you date them.

Is this live or online is it a rebuy bingo fest these are things you have to gather and take notes? I try to get notes as soon as possible on players especially what I consider to be bingo players or bad players. When I see that even if take bad beats its worth it cause I will have the notes on them for the future:) The bingo thing shows a serious weakness imho if I see a guy all in all the time right off the bat any two cards I know he doesnt have the fortitude to hold up when we get to the third hour. I will seriously use that against him if get to that level. Sometimes they pull an AA though and that happens but I trust the notes I took for the future and believe overall its going to pay off in the long run:)
