Is there an actual strategy or way anyone uses in order to get out of a losing streak? Does anyone have any good tips that we can all use when we get those ugly downswings and get on a losing streak?

Take a break and come back when you feel motivated.Downswings

can easily led to tilting and bad for bankroll.

I have not figured out a good way to overcome a downswing. Can not do anything about the cards dealt and figure the other players found a leak or two. So i figure I will call with the flop with the next 5 6 hand dealt. I know that is wrong, but it helps me to pay attention and realize how others are watching my play. When things do turn around I may be more alert and on my way out of the downswing. See you at the tables.--r

Well, if you were winning before, it could be just a downsizing caused by the normal variance of poker. But if you changed your game strategy, it´s time to think about it. But, if you are continuously losing, review your tactics. Something is wrong.

It´s important too remember that poker is most a mind game, and maybe you are not playing your best due the bad phase you are in. Are you tilting in your games? If yes, you will need to prepare mentally before every game. Stay calm and confident.

I say it could be a number of reasons why you have hit a downswing. I like to take a break think about my game and my goals. Maybe when I come back to the table i tighten up my game. I see a lot of people who are trying to make good with bad plays or outright bad cards and try playing the people not the cards at the tables. Which is fine but true story nonfiction the best hand wins when it comes down to showdown. Yup major cause of a downswing is loosing hands need i say more lol. One main thing here is your on the right track to fixing your problem if you have one.

Taking a break helps a lot, so for sure take 2-3 days off. If you do keep playing, play tighter. Don't play anything but top hands and PPs but be careful with small one's. Don't be to proud to fold them pre-flop against big raises, and if you do get into the pot cheap with them, fold if you don't hit the board. Don't chase a lot. Avoid all in's while you are on this downswing. Get over thinking you will lose no matter what. Talk positive to yourself, and get your confidence back. When you change your thinking, your game will change too. One more thing. Set yourself a limit on how much you can put into playing for one day. And if you lose that, then really stop. I do that all the time. I buy into a MTT or cash table and lose either one I quit that site for the day. You are doing right by posting these things so you can get some feedback. GL to you

It seems there's a general assumption in this thread that the cause for the downswing/losing streak is due to a player playing too loosely(???... as the general advice seems to be along the lines of "tighten up your play").

This is something we can assume some of the time for some of the players (more often than not..... 'newer' players ... which often have a tendancy to play too many hands).

My advice is > Just keep playing the best you can for each & every given situation. If you feel your results are lacking due to playing poorly (or sub-par, not your 'A'-game, etc. etc.) find out just why that is
ie.
sometimes we may lack confidence due to variance;
sometimes we may get too emotionally invested in the game(s);
sometimes we might be losing interest & find ourselves getting distracted;
sometimes we get into a rut and fall back on more of an ABC style of play:
sometimes we might get a bit of a superman complex (ie. naruto_miu) and feel we need to outplay every player in every single pot (regardless of whether or not we're making some huge fundamental errors)... otherwise known as Fancy Play Syndrome (F.P.S. for short).

'or' sometimes we might think we're better than we actually are (< this is another very common one, especially (again) for newer'ish' players).

It's possible to run like utter dog crap for long stretches of time. This doesn't mean we're going to be still running like this on the very next hand (... I don't believe in being 'in a bad streak' or 'in a downswing'... but I do believe in "I've been experiencing a downswing over the past while"). Meaning > it's not just some sort of unlucky thing that we're stuck in where we can use a wand or shiney ball to snap us out of it.

Ways to get out of feeling in a funk.
Watch a poker training video.
Rail some good players.
Post some HH's for comments.
Read other's HH & before reading the responses, try to evaluate what you would do & why.

You can take a few days away... 'or', you can spend some time getting better at poker. By saying this I'm not suggesting you're not good at poker 'or' that good players don't have bad days (weeks, months).
We can't control running badly but we can control playing badly.

Its not about being playing too many hands or hands that are weak many times, but when I you AA, or KK against a lower pair 6 or 7 times and you lose all the time, what is it then?? being a bad player??? you leave an opponent with 2 outs pre flop and he hits every time then does that make you a bad player????

As bad as this may sound but in order to come out of a losing streak you have to begin a winning streak. Good luck with that :)

Edit: what are you classing as a losing streak? Are you playing cash/mtt/sng? How much are you investing per session/day?

Just to put those questions into perspective I felt like I had one of the best days in well over 6 months and spent well over $200 playing online mtts between 0.82 and 4.40 and still came out $27 down for the session but did it bother me? NO!! as long as you play to the best of your ability each and every game then that is all that matters, if you play with a solid BRM then you will be making money in the long run and that is all that matters!!!

I was actually thinking about mtt play for the last day or so and came to that the conclusion that if you put enough time and effort into the game and providing that you are able to beat the game for the slightest amount that you will be able to make money providing you play enough games. EG. you run at 25c profit average over all of your games therefore over the course of 100000 you could stand to profit $25,000 so providing you're a winning player the 1st place you shouldn't be too worried about being on a losing streak as in the long run you will be making money :) now if only I could take in my own words :D also if any of my words or calculations are off I blame it on the smirnoff

The best I believe is to run.

Stop for couple of days just for the sake of protecting our BR.

It all depends on luck. And if it does not, then get out is not an option.

Play very tight for a day or two. Play only good dealt hands. Winning will come again.

I like to think of poker from a mathematical stand point. If you consider that any event in an infinite system can and will occur, then an apparent downswing is inevitable. And let's be honest, we would play forever if we could. With a set of variable that only pertain to the local environment; deck, players, table, time of day, etc., I have found that the best way to get away from a downswing is to change the variables.

First thing that I would do, like many have said so far, is take a break. Continuing to play when the odds are against you puts you in greater danger of going on tilt. Take a break, get your head right, and come back ready to kill it. One more note on that: If the idea of taking a break seems ridiculous, stop immediately. Your not focused on what is important, and that's winning.

Never chase your money.

Change tables. That will get you a new deck and new opponents. A new set of variables will make you play a tighter game. It will also keep your opponents from exploiting any leaks you have.

I'm not a pro by any means, just a few things I've learned over the years.

Make your own luck.

Once you have determined that it is not a change to your playing style or you making bad decisions there are really only two ways to get out of a downswing.

1. Stop playing altogether. This guarantees to end the losing streak.
2. Keep playing as normal. The downswing will end eventually so long as, as I said above, it is not your play that is at fault.
