Gamblers! I would like to read a new book, not anymore about poker strategy but more like poker maths and probability.
Has anybody of you read both or one of this books?

Matthew Hilger's Texas Hold'em odds and Probabilities

Owen Gaine's Poker Maths that Matters

Or has any good suggestion about the subject?

Thank you!

These two books are not read, can not say anything

But I read The Math of Hold'em Collin Moshman, Douglas Zare , authors very easy to describe the information, lots of useful information and will help to improve your game...

Hiya Stefano. I have been looking for a book myself on maths in poker. I have recently ordered "The mathematics of Poker" by Bill Chen. This was recommended by a friend of mine and he says its good. I will be interested to see what others recommend too. Good Blog !!

Unless you have a significant math background and you're an advanced player looking to incorporate GTO play into your game, Chen's book is not going to be of any use to you. It's not an easy read, and the things it helps with are USELESS at the micros.

Most poker players never get to the level at which Chen's book is applicable, so keep that in mind.

Good luck.

Vorhaus's book Killer Poker by the numbers is quite good. I've read most of the others listed here too and... it's for certain that Bill Chen's book is a hard read. Ed Miller's book the 1% goes into some of the ideas behind the frequencies of poker but it's not very clear on how to impliment it

Good suggestions everybody! I was looking for something really basic since i have really few knowledge and i pratically never calculate when at the table, so by now i am oriented on Gaine's one because of better reviews on the web. The reason i consider Hilger's one is basically that is cheap and has a certain amount of exercises, that i think can help in apply directly at the table. Nobody had any experience with this one?

I will now read some reviews and download some extracts of the one you suggested. I will let you know my decision, in case somebody else wants to study the same subject

Keep on suggesting guys! Your reviews are way more precious than the ones on amazon ;)

Cheers

Poker Maths that Matters is better if you are going to buy one from two.:D

"The mathematics of Poker" by Bill Chen is even better but hard to read:D need advanced maths level or at least you have already passed college level maths class.:D

Hi XXPXXP! I checked the book from Chen, seems a lot complete, but has two things that would make me choose another one: maybe i need one that is more basic (i study economics, i have some basis about mathematics and statistics, but i cannot apply a lot outside the exercises i did in university, so maybe i need something to start) and has no kindle version, while i love to read on kindle.

So if you advice a little more Poker Maths that Matters is another point in the choice of this book. Have you read the both?

I have read them both --- and many others. I have a Masters in Applied Stats and I'm an online pro, and I'll telling you definitively that Gaines' book will be MUCH more helpful to you than Chen's book will.

Bill Chen's "Mathematics of Poker" is very highly recommended.

Even if you do not fully understand what you read, you will start to think more like a game-theoretic logician at the poker table which can be very helpful. By no means would i advise anyone to play from a purely mathematical perspective (deception is probably more important than the math given that about 90% of hands get mucked) but it is important to know the math too.

True Story: I purchased a copy of "The Mathematics of Poker" as soon as it was published. Bill Chen had just won two wsop bracelets in one year. Also, in an interview he said the book was targeting laymen. It seemed like a good idea.

I quickly found that I was in over my head; so, I gave it to a player in the home game I was in at the time. This player happened to be a lecturing university mathematics professor. He felt like the book was too much like going to work. :D

Cheers!

I tried to make the same point in my post above. VERY few people here have a strong enough math background to get anything useful out of Chen's book. I have a Masters in Applied Stats and I still had to work to comprehend everything in the book. So, IMO, anyone without a strong math background shouldn't spend their money on the Chen's book.

Thank you everybody, i really appreciated your help. Cardschat is really a nice place as some of you said in my presentation.

So i decided i will read, after professional no limit holdem, gaine's poker maths that matters, and i will check how is for me and expecially if i can actually apply what i learned when sitted at the table. If i decide to go further, i will for sure read chen's book, but as i saw in the reviews is about limits and derivatives and really complicated stuff, no doubt it is complete, but i dont think i can apply, at least by now. I will keep in consideration anyway, i think is a really good next step to go on, even if quoting punctual, i think math has importance, but secondary to the gameplay learning since big part of the hands doesnt even get to showdown.

Is anyway a book i didnt know the existence and now i consider a really good choice for an advanced players.

Thank you again everyone
