I recently started using holdem manager 2 on the trail subscription. I must say I am very impressed with the information it gives you. I still do not understand all the numbers but I am reading to learn that. I have a couple of question:

1. I have seen a couple of players in cash games be classed as whale by HM2. Many times, these players have big stacks. I know of one player, I have seen him multiple times, that always seems to be doubling up with crazy hands. It shows him as a whale but from experience, I think he is more of a shark in a whale suit. Is it just me seeing him get lucky or has the HUD mis rated this player? BTW, this same player will fold to my bets many times. Others, I have seen him chase against.

2. Leak buster in HM2 seems like it could be a great tool. Is it worth the extra $99 to get it?

3. How does the pro version compare to the standard version?

Thanks for all the help!

1. It is common to see whales sitting on huge stacks. They are all big losers anyway, it is just that they sometimes win a few big hands in a row.

2. HM2 itself is great, Leak Buster is not so great for lower levels (2NL, 5NL) in my experience. Save your money until you get to at least 10NL or better and then you can buy it from profits.

This really depends on the number of hands you have on them.
Sample size is crucial.

Pro version just means you can see HUD on stakes above lowstakes.

3. How does the pro version compare to the standard version?

pro version works on every level of buyin...
small stack [maybe you are using that one] is designed for cash game less than NL50. tournament buyin less than 25?[see HM2 sites]

Upgrade from Small Stakes Edition to Pro Version costs about $40. So if you decide to upgrade, at the end of the day you pay overall the same price as if you bought Pro Version straight away.

thanks man, in that case ill might buy standard version sooner than i thought and it probably work for me long time... and if i ever move higher at stakes 40 bucks probably wont be the problem...

1. HM2's autorate icons are not always reliable. Some argue they're deceptive and should be eliminated, which is the approach taken with PT4. That said, the rules that create them are customizable and are based on pure stat filters and sample sizes. I don't remember the exact Whale rule offhand (at work and don't have HM2 in front of me) but as I recall it's generally a huge VPIP, minimal RFI/PFR, either low AF or high WTSD. I will say if it still flags someone as a whale after a couple hundred hands, then they probably are. As to whales with stacks, nothing about stack sizes or winnings factor into the autorate icon AFAIK, it's based strictly on how they play. You should know that terrible players can luckbox themselves into big stacks from time to time, but it's a high variance thing -- they will spike far more bustouts and losses over the long term.

2. Haven't looked at LeakBuster in years, since I played 50NL at pretty high volume, but it was pretty good back then if you knew how to filter and use it properly. I'm sure it's probably improved since then, I own it but haven't played cash to speak of for a few years now so haven't kept up with the latest updates.

3. Answered. Both HM2 and PT4 offer upgrades to their Pro versions that roughly equal what you would have paid outright for Pro. If you're a long way yet from moving across their stakes threshold, there's not a lot of reason to invest in the Pro version right away.
