When you hit mid pair, when is the proper time to raise to protect your hand? Say J 8 5 and you hit the 8. Would you only raise if your kicker was greater than J or had additional outs? If there was a draw on the board?

It's all situational.
Was I in the blinds with an 8x and was folded/limped around to me?
Were the limpers weak or strong players?
Did I try to make a blind steal from LP with 8 and a face?
Did I get called from weak or strong players?

Like I said, all situational, but the generic answer to your question would have to be to bet middle pair and slow down to any callers IMO.

That's one of the weaker points of my game. I check middle pair too much, then when somebody bets because everybody checked, probably a bluff, but I'm afraid to call and chase, because a continuation bet will get me to fold. I know I should raise more often.

I freely admit to being no expert, but hitting 8-8 on the flop is no big incentive to me to be risking chips when so many other cards could be winning.
Depending what the tourny is, where its at (early, late) and what cards suits are (is there a flush?) then maybe call to see another card, but easy fold if raised.

I'd have to agree with shinedown. With the info you gave, a good feeler bet would show you where you are at and if you get action back, just let it go. The situation would be by far the biggest factor with middle pair though. If you have a specific example post up the hand history and everyone can tell you for sure what they would have done.

Thanks. I don't got a specific example. I guess I want to know ideal situations for raising with mid pair.

If I hit with middle pair 8's I will bet it no matter what kicker I have If i'm raised and my kicker is lower than 10 I might fold. And as the guy above said it also depends on what kind of player i'm up against.

Unfortunately, it depends, it depends, it depends is indeed the right answer. Probably depends the most on how many other players are in the pot and my read on them.

Mid Pair

The kicker would not matter much in my decision.
icon10.gif

If you are deciding to Check or Bet > Always Bet.
icon14.gif

If you are deciding to Call or Raise > Always Raise.

If you are deciding to Call or Fold > Always Fold.

Decisions depend so much on the past plays, image and reads of both you and the other players that you should do what feels right.

Sounds to simplistic:
The only theory I put behind it is the fact that you are deciding between two choices and your instincts are trying to tell you something.

Always Trust your Instincts:

They may not always be right but if you continue to play this way you may develop an uncanny sense of knowing the right move at the right time.

Just my thoughts.

First off, not enough info to properly answer your question.

That said...Don't fall into the group that always bets mid pair regardless the conditions. Change it up, don't be predictable or good players will see it right away and use it to their advantage. (If you can't tell....I love the guys that just have to raise mid pr. predictably, they make me money....even when I don't have cards...:p )

I do not think there is a simple answer to this question. A lot depends on how many players are in, did they limp, position etc etc. Sorry if it was that easy we would all be pretty rich.
