Players with monster hands are usually raisnig high preflop... at least they should...
There is no way to predict what your opponent have. You should know when to fold, raise or go all-in. It depends on the phase of the tournament, your stack, hand and cards on the table.
When you have highest pair on the table you should rise or go all-in if your stack is low and when you think there won't be better chance later. Rise/check if you have big stack, but fold if someone goes all-in and there's no big pot.
Sometimes it's just lottery.

Analyzing betting patterns is the best way to read your opponent. It not an exact science will definitively help. You have to take into consideration the position of the players, what they did preflop etc.

Raise, further miss the line, look at the action of the opponent. Perhaps intuition will tell you that your hand is not the strongest .. If the player limps and does not show the strength of AA, KK, QQ it's not easy to figure it out .. Do not play for the whole stack being unsure .. pocket pairs are a very dangerous hand if nothing on the table Has come ...

Make a limp. You can use it as a fraudulent method. For example, playing at an aggressive table and being in an early position - you have a monster. In this case, you will not scare other players and will be able to raise if someone makes a bet after you.

a good tip: dont always bet top pair. By doing this, you might avoid making the pot out of control but also checking villain's range with minimum cost & getting worse hands to call after. However this strategy requires a good read, of course.

On the other hand, consider & take notes on your villain. This will help you later.

Generally speaking, it all depends on what you know about your opponents. Not everyone raises with big pairs like KK or AA, and many players brt big with pairs like 77 or 88. Without knowing your opponents, all you are doing is playing the odds. It takes time to learn your opponents' tendencies, and all you can go with is your instincts and the patience to stay around long enough to learn them.

Your suggestion that you "usually" get beaten by an over-pair really says you most likely have selective memory. That is just mathematically not going to happen, you are just remembering these losses more than the wins (don't worry we all do it).

My suggestion would be to control the pot and not overplay your hand. Over and over I see people all in with just top pair and top kicker. This is, and always has been, a quick way to the rail. A pair (even over-pair) is just that, 1 pair. If you have top pair, that is great, hopefully its a winner, but this is a very vulnerable hand and must be played accordingly. Take a minute and go through how many hands beat your hand when going into a big pot. If your hand shrinks up, maybe it would be a good idea to fold. It can be hard some times, but try to get out of the habit of putting large amounts (or all) your chips in the middle with just 1 pair.

Here are the results, based on a sample size of two million simulations: A pocket pair was dealt to exactly one of the nine players 648,997 times (for a rate of 32.45%). A pocket pair was dealt to two or more players 190,748 times (for a rate of 9.54%).

Does this mean 58.01% of the time all nine players did not get pocket pairs? hmmm... these are nice info:cool:

Yes! This also means that once in 4 rounds at least one of nine players have a pocket pair and once in 11 rounds two or more players have pocket pairs. This is the average frequency when these situations happens! A tournament with 3000 players on pokerstars ends somewhere after 200-250 rounds. 200 rounds is quite small sample size and average frequency deviate huge comparing with average frequency for a 2 millions sample size.

P.S. Here is the script I wrote in python to simulate starting hands situations. If u have any questions/suggestions feel free to ask.

usually when you flop top pair you shouldn't get beaten by higher pairs but that does happen, try to realize where you are in the hand (kicker strength, and where your pair is) based on your hand and the way your opponent is playing it and fold if you think you are beat.

Don't make a high-bet, just 2X or 3X, then watch your opponents and move on depending on flop.

I usually limp. Maybe a small raise. Looking for someone to shove on me.

In order to diffuse this situation, I would check and see how much my opponent is betting.

The biggest indicator if a player has a strong hand is if the player is shoving chips with the intent on you calling .

It is also worth noting which kind of hand you are holding which factors into the decision making.
