So I'm really new to online poker. I started playing holdem micro cash games and didn't do so hot, losing my $20 that I started with a few weeks ago(I know not a lot, just trying to get experience).

Yesterday I switched to playing STT $1+$.10 SNG. First game I played finished 2nd, then 9th(bad decision), then 1st. After that I've finished 3rd a couple times and 2nd once, but averaging 4th-5th, including 4th in $3 triple up(?).

I play pretty tight and fold pre flop unless I have decent pocket cards(AQs, AKo QQ, 66, etc.). Very rarely bluffing with crappy cards. This usually allows multiple players to be eliminated before me but I'm not in the best of shape, and relying on good hands to stay in the game. Any tips would help. How should I be playing these cards pre flop: Q4o, J5o, 10 7s, K2s, 5 6o? When you first started playing did you lose some of your starting BR, if so how long till you started winning?

keep your head up and you will find the variance that every poker player goes through.. 20 sngs for a dollar each is not that bad but if you are new it will seem more difficult. i think the reason why you held on is because your playing tight. that has pros and cons because you are playing to break even and sometimes you get sucked out on. you have to play to win.. that doesnt mean be over aggressive it just means that you have to change your style of play a little.

Thanks for the tips I'll keep playing and see if I can change a few things. Its frustrating when your late in the game and you wish you'd played a few better hands.

Random question and I'll need to start winning online first... but say theres a daily $40-$60 buyin tourney at your local casino, about how many people play in them?

playing a tight ABC game does good, learning how to exploit pays better:)
are these normal speed or turbos (or both)?
you may have to loosen your range a bit (not q4o,t7s..) but more Ax, suited connectors…
also know the table dynamics, how many aggressive and or passive players?
a lot of people tighten near the bubble, you should usually be more aggressive
(everything is always villain dependant-theres never just 1 answer)
usually a bit more aggression on the button/blinds and more caution when you're 1st to act
deeper in when the blinds are high is a time to push more and loosen up a bit too
also when under 10bbs or so, don't play unless you're ready to go allin, really, when small stacked pick your hand and shove (and pray) don't limp or min bet…
ummm…

don´t change what properly works

I don´t think you have to change your game if you are winning, why are you gonna play Q4o? what are the odds? if you start playig those hands, then you are going to start losing no matter what, because the secret of the success is to play good and stick to that, not to change because it will be better to win every hand, because nobody does that, doesn´t it?

so not necessary to change your game,

They are turbo, I played two $3 sng and they were normal speed. That makes sense, I normally play tight near the bubble unless I have a nice hand. Its the times I have 6 or so hands in a row that I have to fold, when I'm thinking about playing Q4o, just to see what happens.

How does you losing 3 $20 BRs help the OP in this thread??

Keep playing tight, wait till you're about 30 hands in and find the weak players, and try picking on them.
Pick the right spots to steal some blinds.
Open your hand range on the bubble.
You should be staying away from turbos, till you get good in reg SNGs, since Turbos can kill a BR quick.

I'm with micalupagoo, on this.

in turbos you have to open your range even more, and more aggression is needed, you should be taking advantage of the players who tighten up like you near the bubble (tho don't over do it and pay attention to how many left to act etc)
and if you are going to play q4o, play it like aces
just don't overdo the bullying or you will get called with a wider range too (and sometimes they do have a monster)
let us know how it goes

Double or Nothing/Triple-up games use significantly different strategies than regular STT's, don't play these unless you've done some reading on what's going on and what the differences are.

Position and its implications is something that you should definitely look at if you haven't already, because it makes a huge difference in starting hand values. For example, if you raise UTG with AJ (you should be folding AJ in early position in the beginning when blinds are low and no one has been knocked out yet), you get callers, and there's an Ace on the flop, you may lose all your chips if somebody has AQ/AK and you think you're good but wind up with the second best hand.

On the flip side, AJ on the button in an unopened pot is a great situation to raise against the blinds. Even if somebody calls pre-flop, you will still have position after the flop and in some situations you can get a better hand to fold by the turn.

Turbos aren't good for beginners, you have to take risks with marginal hands and have good post-flop skills because others will often be playing loose too.

For STT play, a good book to take a look at is Sit 'n Go Strategy by Collin Moshman.

Well first of all welcome to the wonderful world on online poker, and to Cards Chat..

With that said, why not get a Hud to give you a better understanding of all the questions that you had asked, I only suggest this as a means to help you understand more about your game and also the players that you are playing with.

I mean if you're good at reading the table/players and situations than by all means (you can do without a HUD)..But it would help you out with answering some of your questions that you had asked for.

For instance you need to steal more from later positions vs tight players and/or loose/passive players (the type that call and fold post flop majority of the time)..Not with ATC but more or less as Micalupagoo had suggested with Ax/Kx (Suited)..

Also since you're new to online poker I'd suggest sticking with normal STT SNG's (I mean the turbo's are better because players play looser in them+more aggressive players are in them), but the issue with that is that you would really need to up your own aggression level and that sounds like something that would be out of your comfort zone at the moment

You must learn to play the different phases of the tournament. There's a lot depends on the blinds. If you have a few chips (for me about 10BB) I play wide stealing more blinds. Of course, the position is also very important but it all comes with time.
Good luck at the tables:)

I dont know how long do you play poker but If you are like complete beginner and want to take it little bit seriously, you have to just

1. study the game (odds, strenght of hands, power of position, basics of bluffing...) and if you concetrate on STT I would recommend some specific training about that, especially on bubble.

2. practise

There is Carbon poker, BlackChipPoker, AmericasCardroom, and juicy stakes 2.0. Check them out, to see how quick the SNGs fill up.

Thanks I will try them out soon. I made this thread about sng but ended up putting another $20 roll on bovada and playing micro cash games. I can play tight or aggressive. In the last couple days I managed to lose no more than 40% of my roll and have regained 20% of that, so still negative but hopefully going in the right direction.
