Hi I've been playing poker for a little while now and I keep hitting the same problems, I have tried reading books and online videos but then I try to play like how the book teaches, I find most books out there to be recipe books. So I keep making mistakes because I'm following the books but when I stop and just play how I want to play I seem to do so much better and seem to think more about the game but I want to improve my game and I have a plan of action and just looking for some advice on if you guys thing its a good way to proceed, just so you know I normally play live. I was thinking of maybe getting Owen gains 2 books one is for poker math and the other is for reading hands, I figured at least this way I can play the player and use the math side to make profitable plays, then I was thinking about getting books on poker tells, does anybody think this is a good way to go about improving or do you have any suggestions

Try to use training software. For example Leak buster. It analyzes your game, helps to find out leaks and after that gives advices how to get rid of them.
I have used it for few months and it helped me a lot.

Thankyou for getting back to me and helping I play live cash games so on terms of software I'm a little stuck. Do you know any books id prefer a book that teaches you to think about the games and how to adjust rather than something that says when you have x do y ??? I heard somewhere that Jonathan littles book on cash games is good but haven't got round to checking it out

Your plan sounds very sound and I can relate. I have read a lot of books on poker and have had the same experience. Many books like you say are recipe books almost of do this not that and this very very static thinking in a dynamic game is a "recipe" for failure and confusion. What I can say is use these as an insight into what opponents could potentially be doing and as strategic options available to you. Doing your own thing in a way that makes sense to you is the best from the strategy side.

Now what important is where you get your sense from. If its from an uninformed and non logically based perspective that can be dangerous. So I like your idea, especially for live games, to read up on the math, live reads, hand reading and psychology.

Recommendations based on this approach would be Mathematics of Poker, Reading poker tells, The Mental Game of Poker, Elements of Poker and any of the hand review books written by Nate Mavis or Andrew Brokos from the thinking poker podcast. This is a good starting point I can recommend from my experience. There are many more books on these topics out there and some better some worse. Best bet start here or somewhere, play and test what you're studying, adjust and repeat. Good Luck and stay persistent as a perpetual learner!

There is nothing wrong with reading and learning from books on poker, but I never have read one, and I probably never will. I just want to work on my own style, and I have done that with the help of the members here. I post my problems, get some advice, and take it to the tables. If it works with my style of play, I continue to use it, but if it don't, I leave it behind. I started doing that 2 years ago, and so far it has worked, but I have so much more to learn. GL to you

I mean I'm looking to develop my own style I know I like to play somewhere between tight and loose just a good mix and I like to play aggressively, I am good at adjusting preflop to the table and the people in playing with but post flop sometimes I just get so lost and don't know where I am in the hand behind ahead. I think if I just knew how to improve my post flop game id be happy. Any thoughts on how to improve post flop play ?
