First off I just want to say hello to everyone after finding these forums.

I have been toying with the idea of playing online poker for sometime now and finally decided I am going to give it a try, over the last couple of weeks I have been watching live poker, tutorials and looking at various other resources including lurking on these forums so that once I begin I am not completely ignorant about strategy and so on.

I have come across one thing that I have a question about though and that is if players widely use programs like "Online Hold'Em Inspector" to give them an edge and if so is it necessary to utilise something like that to stand a chance to match those using them?

Thanks in advance for any replies and I hope this was the correct part of the forums to post this under.

Well i do not think it will help you much. Calculating odds and counting outs becomes like a second nature after a while. Simply after watching videos and reading books you will kinda know what your exact odds are for any type of hand.

Welcome to the forums!

You've come to the right place to learn how to play and win.

As you develop (from beginner to pro even) you have to balance studying (like asking questions on here) and playing (to practice and add some of the stuff you're hearing about to your game).

Like mentioned above, anything regarding strength of your hand or the odds that this or that type of card come out are super basic. You should be very familiar w/them before playing (or look @ playing for free while you figure it out). Serious players do use software like pokertracker to get an edge, but that is for more advanced information.

I think that mastering the basics, learning and observing is more important than all these programs, these are overrated - i wish you success, luck and fun in the forums !

Hi Matt - what is widely used by pros and wannabes is either Poker Tracker or Hold'Em Manager (PT3 or HEM). Most players have found things like Inspector does very light work for you. In other words nothing you cant do yourself, even if you have to have a chart nearby for reference.

I don't know how much your planning to start with for your bank roll, but imo(ive never used any poker trackings software myself) Don't buy it until you have enough poker winnings to purchase it. Sofware won't turn you into a winning player it will turn a winning player into a more profitable one generally. This all being said again I've never used software so I don't know it's true potential and or lack there of...I could see how it could be useful down the road if your playing 10 or more tables at a time...hard to keep mental and or physical note about anything with that many tables. However just starting out you shouldn't play more than 1 or 2 tables at time so I would just wait till your farther along in your game to decide.
(edit) And Hello welcome to card chat.

i agree that the software is kinda over rated. once you start knocking out several tourneys a day or hours of rings it adds up to thousands of hands. poker becomes second nature, afterall you would of been in just about every scenario one could think of.

start out in the welfare games, become comfy in your actions. start to increase your bankroll and slowly move up from there.

i prefer the idea of that if your new, learn good basic poker skills, no pokertracker or holdem manager, just play your game, learn the do's and donts of poker

once you have a better grasp of the basics and have played maybe 50 sng's or 30+ hours of cash whatever your choice, then get something like hm2 or pt3, they are really helpful

but if you get those programs straight away you will get information overload, you need to learn to read people and bets without these program, then introduce them later on to give you that extra edge

my opinion anyway

When I started to play online (I had already been playing live limit holdem for a while), I choose to start with the play money on the site I selected just to get a feel. Even though the players are very loose, it taught me to be patient and not play crap. I learned my rule #1, which is don't chase. This has saved me tons of chips and I got much deeper into the games I played.

I quickly started to play real money games which has much better players. Good Luck in your online adventure. ;)
