First thread ever so bare with me :)
I am not a brand new player to texas holdem, I have been playing for about 2 years. Are their any threads that I can go and get some Holdem tips? I never played at casinos or at any major events, but I do play with my family all the time. We will do little $10-$20 buy ins and their will be 8-10 of us that play, and their fun and all. But, in 2 weeks I will be playing a much bigger tournament (Live) with 16 players and $32 buy in. I dont know the players I am playing with. I prefer loose play overall, and aggressive when I hit a nice stack.
Oh and I have no idea what freebetting is or a c bet, or what positioning is lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

I would rather prefer tight aggressive than loose aggressive.

You really have to know about continuation bet and positioning since these are important things at live games.

Good luck.

Why tight aggressive and not vice versa?

Hey Raven!

Welcome to CardsChat and thanks for your post!

Your question is a bit general, as asking how to play better in a tournament is much like asking which highway to take from Dallas to Cincinnati. There are many highways, many roads, many play styles, many decisions which go into a single tournament which contribute to your overall success.

As for which style to play in a tournament? The one which works for you. Generally, most experts advocate a TAG approach to the beginning stages of a tournament, and opening up your game as the tournament advances. A LAG approach can also be effective, but it is generally left best to those who have mastered the basics, as there is a higher risk involved with playing loose-aggressive.

Why not take a look here: https://www.cardschat.com/poker-strategy.php

and then browse this forum: https://www.cardschat.com/forum/tournament-poker-59/

and then post any specific questions you may have.

Glad to have you with us!

After typing it, I realized that it was a bit too general lol. But thanks so much! I will surely look at those forums for sure!

The less you know about the game the fewer hands you want to be involved in, hence play tighter. Good luck & enjoy.

If poker were as simple as deciding how to play in a vacuum, I have no doubt that more players would be winners. The thing is though, it's played against opponents who have different styles, strengths, weaknesses, etc. So, while staying within a zone that's not too unfamiliar / uncomfortable, you should look to adjust as much as you can in whatever ways are most advantageous at your particular table vs your actual opponents.

That said, tight aggressive will be fine in practice a good deal of the time, partly because it helps to cut down on the number of hard decisions you face.

Just play tight in the early phase, but you got to be more aggressive in the latter phase after all the fish had gone to steal blinds in order to survive.
