In a Limit game of holdem -- a low limit game, I have questions about being in the small blind. I am told that a mistake most new poker players make is to 'play' too many hands in the small blind because they think either "im already in for half" (without a raise on the table), or they think, "its only half the bet for everyone else"
I do know that those arent the correct ways to think, but is there any way to alter the 'hands played' between the Small Blind and the 1st To Act (left of the button), or are they exactly the same, even though the cost for the S.B. is half as much (agian, without any raise on the table)?
Can anyone explain this to me a bit better please -- thank you in advance!

The small blind is a really bad position to play. Although you do get the discount, you are playing in first position and you will be first to act post flop every time. A lot of players do make the mistake of playing a lot of hands in the SB and BB. Don't be afraid of folding your small blind, the idea in the small blind should be to try and lose as little money as possible.

If you check your poker tracker I'm sure your SB win % will be very low.

In a cash game, I only play premiums in the SB.

In a tourney its a whole different ballgame.

You can raise the BB if its folded to you for example to try to steal his blind.

I prefer the "limp and lead" (complete and minbet), it works very often and is cheaper than raising the big blind, and its looks not so aggressive..

The only downside to this though is you inflate the pot out of position, a key factor in playing out of position is pot control. Especially if you have a lot of limpers or raise before you pre flop, you don't have very much fold equity. In general, I feel like it is more important to defend your blinds in a tournament than it is in a cash game

I have a rule for the SB. If I can't raise, I fold.

Flatting the SB is just putting a "raise me" sign on your forehead.

If there are a few limpers before, I'll limp my SB a decent amount of time with suited hands, connectors, etc. But I consider myself relatively disciplined when it comes to being able to lay down medium strength hands vs aggression
