Well it is not an easy task to do but first step probably should be to define your own ranges for each situation and then put yourself in his spot and imagine what would you have there and also adjust it wider or tighter acording to weather is he tighter or wider than you...

are you strictly reffering to tournament play or poker in general?

Ok i moved this to learning poker...

Well as i say, define your own opening ranges for every position, define your coldcall ranges for each position and against each position, same with 3bet ranges and call3bet ranges if you had those and i would say avoid having them OOP.

Now after you know that are your ranges you can put player with the similar play style (similar stats) to you with a same range pretty safe but you also need to know what to do when you have him on specific range, it is definitely not an easy concept to apply but its definitely worth it when you master it...

There is no quick and easy fix for anything, some things things take a lot of learning, others a lot of experience, putting player on a range takes both, u have to follow the game and always watch what cards they show on showdown, plus the cards on the board and u could start having a good idea about their range, what cards they open with, what cards they flat with, and so on.
So again sorry but there is no easy way to do what u have asked, but it gets easier with time, if u practice a lot.

Poker isnt for you.

If you had asked for the best way, I might have helped, but as you dont seem to want to put the effort in neither do I.

Thats rubbish as the quickest and easiest way obviously is the best most efficient way and you say you don't want to put in the effort but It would of taken as much effort you used to to give your arrogant rude reply as it would have to just be helpful.

Well honestly in 12ish of your posts this is the first one that is actually longer than 3-4 words. S_a_t_b is here really long, so as I, we saw bunch of people who come ask for a quick magic trick to get better and then when they see that it is impossible to improve at poker over night they go away.

In your example, you havent put an effort to give even slight insight of how long you play poker what game you play what stakes, not to mention you havent even try to look for a right place to ask your question or to look is the similar question already answered but you did put an effort to show how offended you are by his post, if you had put the same effort in your other posts it is a good chance that we wouldn't have this discussion...

Now i dont know you and by 12 posts of your i have read i cant say is poker for you or not but what i can say is that your mindset and attitude is not in a right place to improve in poker... Now if you're willing to start over and actually discuss, DISCUSS, poker im willing to participate, if not, well that your call...

Firstly just because I am to the point doesn't mean I am looking for a quick fix I have been playing for 3 years and wanted to compare my techniques to other peoples and questions are typically a few words long. Secondly I have included the stakes. Finally I have asked here instead of learning poker because It stands out and therefore makes it more likely to get a quicker reply.

My reply took about a minute to write.

A decent reply about ranges would have taken many times longer.

Poker isnt for you.

If you had asked for the best way, I might have helped, but as you dont seem to want to put the effort in neither do I.

I understand where you are coming from, but I think you are a little short sighted. Many people playing poker do not know what they do not know.

I played for years against drunks and very bad players and thought that I was pretty good as I ALWAYS went home up. I had no idea what I didn't know until I started studying. I finally realized that I was a fish when I started learning about position, opening hands and types of players. I had no idea what I didn't know. After unlearning bad habits and continuing to study, I found out that I was still a fish. I had no idea that you needed to learn other players ranges.

The point is that people starting to really take the game serious have no idea what they do not know or even that such things exist. There is a lot to take in and at each level there are new skills to master. Do not get so high and mighty when some of us new guys ask questions. BTW: fastest and best way can still mean that it takes a long time, just slightly shorter method than others.

I clicked on this thread because this is exactly where I am at right now. I am learning ranges. Six weeks ago I had no idea what that even meant or that it was an important skill to learn. I didn't know what I didn't know.

Now to the OP. I am not sure that I am the guy to give any advice, but I spend about 6-10 hours a day, 5 days a week playing and studying. Just the other day I started trying to range people. I play mostly small tourneys and sit-n-go's. I find I do best at those. What I started doing is going into the game as a NIT until I can identify who the tight and loose players are. This is the beginning of figuring out ranges, by seeing what they are betting, where they are betting and then looking at their cards at showdowns. This is nothing more than broad understanding of their range.

To make things easier on myself. I look at 3 things
#1 How many hands is the person playing
#2 From what positions are they playing hands. I break it down into just front, middle and last
#3 What cards are they playing

This tells me what kind of a player they are. This will give me a clue to the range they play. Once I have this figured out, I practice in my mind calling their hole cards.

I am learning to pay attention to every hand. It is HARD to do as it takes a lot of concentration and is very exhausting for me. What I have noticed though is the more I do it, the more it starts to come naturally to me and is a little easier as time goes on. I personally have a long ways to go and until I started practicing had no way of knowing how much work poker was. I just realized the last few days that I can spend months if not years honing this part of the craft.

To all you pros out there, If I am wrong in any of this please correct me before I build bad habits.
