My friend use to play online, and showed me this http://officialpokerrankings.com/po...lts/B834711C3D02470AAC62168B62223AD3.html?t=2

I am trying to get him to play online but he is not interested in it anymore. I take his advice, but keep an open mind also.

Just from this info, what do you think? I have noticed that when I stray from his teachings it bites me in the a..

I know he is good, but still I keep trying to learn from multiple sources. Just not telling him that :D

maybe i overlooked something but that page you linked to did not look very special to me...in fact it was pretty empty AND basic...

as far as taking his advice...if is not an active player than he will not be up-to-date on terminology or anything else related to poker...its not the same game it once was

this forum knows more about poker than your friend i GUARANTEE IT....so just stick around here and learn..

on a final note...LEARNING FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES CAN BE GREAT JUST AS LONG AS THE INFORMATION FLOWS TOGETHER AND ITS ALL CORRECT (LOTS OF INCORRECT INFORMATION OUT THERE)
TAKE NOTES AND SET TIME TO STUDY AND REVIEW

Yeah the fact that he has no interest in playing anymore bothers me , so i am trying to learn from multiple sources definitely, but a lot of the other sources contradict with his teachings which in turn leaves me  And then I try new stuff ,and get knocked out.

In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. "Desiderius Erasmus"

All im trying to say is that, choosing WHO you will be learning from is very important, because if you don't chose the right teacher, you might be getting wrong lessons. Keep that in mind. Good luck.

I am not saying your friend is bad. In fact, we can't say anything about his skill level. He played 69 tournaments 4-5 years ago. We can't even tell if he's a winner or not, since he hasn't opted into the profits showing. We do know how much money he's won but we don't know the total of all his buy-ins. Most of his buy-ins appear to be around the $2.50 mark. If that's truly the average buy-in, he's a small loser.

Even if we knew he was a winner, the sample size (69 tournaments) is far too low to be confident that he's a strong, winning player. I would definitely keep your options open and evaluate a variety of sources.

Edit: Based on the wins we can see, I revised my estimate of his average buy-in down to $2.01 which would make his net profit $25.48 and ROI 18%. Which means we can assume he was likely a winner. But, how confident can we be that his advice is beneficial now? Not only is the sample size small and incomplete, but these results are from years ago playing micro buy-in MTTs. And a LOT of these appear to be min-cashes. I don't see a single final table in the entire sample.

I guess, I am just trying to say, you can probably find better sources of advice than this player.

this ^

That guy's stats. > looks like he played a handful of $1 & $2 mtt's & min-cashed in 60% of them (but they all look like min-cashes & with a high ITM rate I'd guess he's playing way too tight & just looking to get ITM). Also, it looks like he only played for a month & just 69 total games & $166 total prizes.

You could pick up much better stuff here on CC (as has already been mentioned)

Oops! Sorry vinnie. Took me awhile to post my comment & hadn't seen your's yet (was lookin' at OPR & playing in tourneys at same time)

Stick with us here and you won't be led astray.

For reasons the fellows above have highlighted your friends advice could well be wrong.

Thanks guys. I was wondering about his 60% ITM myself. Compared to the top money winners there ITM is 15% avearage. So that means he played to tight?

He told me that was a 50 deposit and he cashed out 135ish. He met a girl and quit playing at that time. They are married now.

Yeah I'm taking his advice, but still keeping an open mind.

Why don't you relay his advice to us at which point we can nitpick?

It's all pretty basic really, common knowledge I think, giving what I read in books, and online, except for a few things he actually made me promise never tell anyone, ever. I made a promise, so I have to stick to it.

Those few things I mentioned are actually why I am studying so hard to make sure he is right, because there so out there in my mind right now, but so far so good I guess.

Does this guy have the great secret to never winning tournaments and just min-cashing micro-MTTs from over 3 years ago? I'll be honest, this guy is in no way good enough to pretend he has some grand secrets for being a winning player. I hope you're not paying him for this "knowledge."

In any case, you don't need to share his secrets. But, you can post hand histories where his secret advice may be involved. And, see if people here suggest the same or different things. The best thing of all, the people here will usually be able to support their advice when asked. So you'll have a better idea of the quality of advice you're getting.

Well he told me he played mostly S&G's, and won a lot of money on a site called Dream Poker. I looked and can't find any info on Dream or his S&G's.
I would not think he would lie to me about that. He said his name there was pleasletmewin or something like that. I'm not paying him. He is the singer in my band. He is the one who got me interested in the game.

As soon as I learn how to,and find hand histories I will post them. Thanks.

'Dream Poker' was on the Prima network (< which later changed to 'microgaming') but stopped running under their own name prior to Sept.2007. 'GNUF' took over their player base.
They used to hold a fair number of freerolls ($1,000) & every 6wks. or so they'd have a 'feature freeroll' some of them as much as $40,000.

For super micro SNG players, they held 10cent 9man's (or maybe 10man.. I forget), with only 10% tourney fee. (DoylesRoom was also on this network).

Also unimpressed with his OPR.

However, something we might all agree on is that when we step away from the game, we gain an impartial view of it. In that case his general knowledge might serve you well, but specifics might not. The philosophy and tactics of the game have changed a lot in those 4 years.

Thanks for this. That all falls in line with what he told me. He said they quit allowing US players there sometime in 2007, He said he left over 300 on the site because they would not let him cash out untill they let US players play again, and that has a lot to do with why he does not want to play anymore.

So Dream now GNUF is still operational? Thanks.

Old school poker still stands strong. Many young players are fast and loose. Play a strong game and you will do fine in the long run.
