It's a good guideline for you to go by if you feel it helps you determine someones
range or secondly to assist you with your positional calling range. For example in early position you might only want to play category 1 and 2 when faced with call + 3-bet if villians suspected 3-betting range is top 10% or less of his range

and if you can narrow down how much of villians 3-bet range he is calling a 4-bet with then you can categorise this, So for example if he is 3-betting category 1-6, in late position is he only calling a 4bet with category 1-2 meaning you have an easy decision facing the flop.

Ofcourse the more accurate your analysis is will determine the success rate of your range categorising but it can be pretty effective for you to determine what range of hands you can 4-bet , and also what sort of range your getting called by when you 3-bet yourself,
how many hands from catogary 4 and 5 could be beating you on a low flop for example if you know he is 4-betting his category 1 and 2 nearly 100% of the time to a 3-bet

For MTTs you won't need caregory 7 and 8.
At the beginning play only 1 + 2 oop and maybe 3 + 4 in Position.
All other groups you just need for blind stealimg in later stages or push-fold with less than 20 BB.

Yea how can you advocate not playing anyone of these categories. This is good for polarizing or merging ranges vs villain based on reads and table presence. Would like to see thread on what ranges you merge and polarize v. Certain type of villain TAG LAG or AGGRO idiot, like myself:)

i hate those categories and i dont think they should be taken too seriously. You can easily call a 3BB-Raise from an obvious LAG preflop in position with 68s... there are a lot situations, where you have to ignore these categories. I like to openraise with all suited connectors, if i know the players behind me a super tags or rocks. if you only play "monster hands" you'll be readable like a book. Too keep your range a little wider, also play some 1- or 2-gappers. Try 3betting with oesd or flush draws... your play should depend on the table and the villians, not on categories.

True but you have to have some way of identifying various types of villains. Personally I like what your saying but, there are true TAG players out there. Maybe other categories are a bit obtruse but hey it helps Tom Dwan is certainly more aggressive than Phil Ivey but both could be categorized as LAG's. I guess the true discussion is how to play against players who routinely make their post flop decisions harder by opening pots with marginal too poor holdings.

Too me these players try to play every angle of the game. But we have to call them something.
