Does anyone have any tips for a first timer. I've been playing online for a little while now and my skills have improved, however, I am looking to start playing live tournaments or cash games at casino's. Can someone walk me through what would typically happen at a casino. What are the lowest stakes that I can play? I am bringing 60$, is that enough? Does it usually take long for others to join the game or are people usually already playing and its just a matter of finding the right table?

If someone can clear these up for me I would really appreciate it!

There will be games going. Depending on where you are going to play there could be anywhere from one game to fifty games. You will be restricted to what they have to offer. Tournaments in clubs or casinos are planned events and the odds of you walking in and there being one to play in are slim to none. For sixty dollars you might find a low ante NL Hold'em game but it's probably not the best option if you want to expperience live play for more than a minute or two. Lowest limits are usualllyu 1-2 Fixed and that would be your only option really with limited funds.. Good luck and have fun.

One important thing to look at when first going to a casino and seeking lower limit games is to consider the rake. In most casinos in the USA, the rake is a fixed percentage with a "cap per hand", for example: 5% with a maximum of $4. That means, when the pots is less than $80, you pay the maximum rake of 5%, so low limit games have a more expensive tax.

A great example in the old days was the $1-$3 Stud games at Foxwoods. The rake was so high, it's difficult for anyone but the house to win in that game. I used to challenge myself by sitting in that game and *just* trying to keep an even stack, which was tough to do!

Frankly, too, $60 is not going to be enough for most games at Casinos. The previous poster is right that you have to find a 1-2 fixed limit for that to be enough at all.

I started playing 2-4 fixed limit HE, and needed about $600 to avoid "going broke", and even then, I "went broke" once and had to replenish my bankroll.

Not enough. The lowest blinds are usually 1/2 with max but in of 200-300. In some casinos outside of vegas max buy in can be as low as 60. Depending on what the max buy in is, then you'll need to figure out whether you're comfortable playing as a short stack in a cash game. Usually not a good idea. Also if you're new to the casino/live game, it takes several orbits to get comfortable with the idea of playing live poker and understanding player tendencies.

The one thing that I was in shock down here about was the idea of 1/1 nl holdem. I do understand the idea of rake being higher and the lower level, but this is a game you need 40 min to buy in and if you pick the right spot you can clean up. I once sat there at this local place to play poker in Tampa with 40 bucks and within 4 hours I had 400. It is up to you how good you think you are and how much you want or can afford. But if you bring 60 and looking for 1/2 you will be at a major disadvantage..

It's not enough for cash I mean it might be most casinos have a minimum buy in of $50 but at 200NL that's a waste of $60

However it might be enough for a MTT you can go to your casinos website to find out their MTT schedule.

As far as what to expect

expect smoke smell and old people, then once you get to the poker room no more smoke but water... I think there's water... lots of fish so there must be water...

60 bux for live is not that much
but probabaly can do.
try to find if there is NL100 blinds 0.5/1 table
or
you may try to find a seat on NL200 table, with 30Big blinds start up, may start with good hands, and waiting.

but considering the variance, would suggest you at least bring about 180 or so.
