Hi i have been playing for a number of years now ans at the best of times i can play well. My problem seems to be that i get bored with the duration of longer games sometimes and get impatient and therefore bet a i should not. Is it just me or do others suffer this as well. Jammon

It's really really common. I think that's one reason that ring games and SNGs are more popular than MT tournaments. When a tournament takes 4+ hours before you're in the money, it's more like a job than fun.

I know with a SNG it'll last an hour or so. I know with ring games I can leave at any time. When I play a tournament I'm committed and I just hope I don't get bored and do stupid stuff :)

I know that working on mental stamina is a huge part of poker.

As a 50+ age member, I think this is why they give the edge to the younger players, a lot. I agree with Killean that it is a game of stamina in the longer tournaments. I can hold my own, I think, but I can remember a time when I had more energy--if I am to be entirely honest about it.

I think patience if one of the most interesiting part of the game.
If you're playing on a tournament you should have a patience , because if you will play every hand or 1/4 of your hand this will be a minus gameplay. Try to have a patience , and try to convinge yours opponents at the table that you have a nice hand.
I remember I had the same problem as you it was on a tournament 4.40$ , and really there was remaning 16/17 players , and I had the monster stack , and really i didn't had a patience , and I started to open to much hands , and trying to bluf my opponents , and I lost all the chips. Learn from your mistakes ;)
Thanks.

Getting impatient in tourneys absolutely a common thing and i am currently suffering from it since 2 weeks
getting into tough spots , letting aggression take hold of my decision ,playing unsually , unnecessary bluffs and playing crap hands because i am getting bored etc
I am trying to workout and practice mentally to be patient and get back into my winning way
it takes time for sure maybe a week

I am gonna take some break and play again which i hope will help me and get better

I do this often too. Its hard to stop in the moment too. I'll play so well for like 2 hrs bet with the right hands fold what I should then all of a sudden I get involved with aces and play hard. I dont know how to fix this problem myself. I love poker but can play when u play so long that you turn out a loser.

Patience is a skill which most poker players do not have when they start or even continue playing poker. Think of it this way. Would you just get out of bed one morning and go and run a marathon? Twenty six miles or forty two km without any training for it? Of course you wouldn't. So, why do poeple think they are mentally and physically able to play a tournament that could last for four to seven hours? Because they are sitting down and playing a card game! They are also probably watching to, listening to music or checking social media. None of these things are condusive to patience development in poker. Nex time you play..... simply focus your mind before the tourney on playing for that period of time and focus solely on the game and see how you do. It takes time and effort.

Best wishes

You are not alone.

I know for a fact that for me the instant I perceive my own impatience, it is the kiss of death. If I'm in a ring game I leave immediately. If I'm in a tourney, I bring up a side distraction, usually solitaire.

If I ever figure out how to control it, I will be a monster on the felts.

I think that this is why so many people multi table. It keeps them focused on playing correctly. I personally will get bored of just playing so watching the toob or doing something else usually feeds the hunger but my game does suffer. I agree with reelmonkey that in time you will learn to be more patient but until that time comes try to stick with sng or cash. Good luck on the felts!

I just lost my little bankroll of $5 because of impatiance, I lost a heads up because of a bad beat, I got so mad that I played a cash game with only All-in and lost it all, patient is very important, you can't be always impulsive

There are plenty of hyper/turbo tournaments out there for people who do not want to sit there playing for hours through a mtt. Also you can register late as sometimes you are only playing for small blinds early on and quite a few players don't bother with the first hour.

When I start getting impatient I do things like I am now... Reading this post while playing. Other time I will get impatient and play when I know I should not because I don't have enough time or should be doing something else.

That is because sometimes it is not even about being patient in waiting for the right situations to come up in your game but it is also about being impatient for wanting to be successful or make money/profit for the month/day etc...

I just posted in my thread on learning to improve my mental game about how I have now noticed that during tournaments when I have a decent stack if I get impatient I will start playing poor hands or situations and spew chips. It is just silly and hurts my long term goals.

This is one of the most important aspects of the tournament players. All the good ones are capable to wait their chances and to protect their stack for long as possible. I am trying to do some things to not get bored. Either to play 2-3 tournaments at once, so there is no need to wait too much time before taking sort of action, or to watch some sport. Also browsing around cardchat forum to see some hands discussion is also nice way to keep your mind sharp, while waiting your time to come.

Getting impatient is a real problem when playing tournaments or freerolls when they last too long . Then I tend to play more loose , many hands , I get tired , I lose focus , I shove much more , I just want it to end . I listen to some music to relax , watch some movies or youtube videos , read forum articles , eat/drink sth , but time doesn't pass quickly . Young people have an edge here , they can stand playing countless hours with a lot of patience .
