I'm very interested in improving my poker abilities and was wondering what poker books you guys would recommend. I would like to start off with a general poker theory type book as well as a poker math/odds type book. I've been playing poker for a while and I've read some strategy articles and watched some videos, but I've heard there's a lot of great books out there too.

Good start is Theory of Poker by David Sklansky and Harrington on Hold'em by Dan Harrington.
Theory of Poker is a bit outdated, but you can still learn a lot.
These 2 books helped me a lot so i proceed to Harrington's other volumes as well.
If you have problems with mental condiotion try Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tendler.

For me the best poker books is the series Harrington on Hold 'em. I read them when I started playing poker, almost 7 years ago.

More than any other book I've read, I can read HOH Vol's 1 &2 over and over, and each time I glean something new from them.

It's about time I picked them up for a 5th reading I think.

Mostly looking to play tournaments for now, but I am interested in learning cash eventually.

Because almost every other poker book assumes you have read the Super System (1 or 2), it has to be on anyone's list of poker books. No need to get both, they are essentially the same.

In spite of how things worked out I found "The Full Tilt poker strategy Guide:" very helpful. You can get it used on Amazon for not much more than shipping, I also liked Annie Duke's, "Decide to Play Great Poker" and Phil Gordon's "Little Green Book," but his "The Real Deal" is likely better for beginners.

I read the books of Dan Harrington and certainly recommend . I also read the book of Gus Hansen that he says every hand played at the Aussie Millions , but this I can say that not added me much. But now I prefer to study reading articles on the Internet , or subscribe to a poker school.

Winning Poker Tournaments one hand at a time Vol. 1 + 2. (Vol. 1 is the better book IMO but both are good reads)

HoH Vol 1+2, both good reads. Vol 3 is ok, but just following HH analysis posts is better IMO.

Tournament poker for advanced players.

All good tournament books.

Avoid anything by Arnold Snyder. It is an interesting concept but IMO he is teaching you to be a donk...lol

Thanks for all the responses, I think I'm going to start with Harrington on Hold'em and go from there.

Just started on this about 2 days ago and the format is very simple and easy to learn with. Although I think you are better of with HOH vols 1, 2 & (3 for mind provoking thought). It goes to show that there is no perfect way to play the game. I would suggest that Chris Moorman's book is for more advanced thinking. Gl with your learning and hope to see you on the felt. :D:D:D

What poker schools do you subscribe to? I've found some forums (eg; 2+2) that were apparently the bomb years ago but seem to be showing their age now so I avoid them.

I have watched (and bought one series) of splitsuit's videos. They're pretty good but my biggest issue with them is that their is no logical progression, he just assumes you know certain things and throws phrases out a lot like 'pot geometry' which after a few videos I can sort of understand in context but leaves me feeling like I missed a lot.

Theory of poker taught me the basics, highly recommend

I like the run it once(www.runitonce.com), but only subscribe for 1 month because I had no time to study, but plan to go back

Not that I want you to get any better or anything but seriously, there are some tournament books out there that are far more relevant & advanced than the HOH series. Pretty sure you'd be far better off to pick one of them up for the very first time instead of those other's for the 5th time (keep in mind... I have picked up HOH at least 3x... but not for many years now.. & have picked up the newer books 3+x... and am still looking to pick up some more for the first time).

LOL. nice!

agree with this post almost 100%. (I think Vol.2 is just as good as if not better than vol.1)

Well, despite what you've said that the old books aren't good for these days poker,I strongly recommend to you to read the "Super System" by Doyle Brunson ,if you haven't red it yet.You may find some things that will improve your game a lot and will give you very nice post flop tactics that will never get old...
:)
Personally i think that this book should be #1 to read for every poker player in the world.

The oldest and best book on poker = "Theory of Poker" by David Sklansky
. It doesn't tell how to play, but why.

Best beginner book on Holdem = "Getting Started in Hold 'em" by Ed Miller

I also liked "The Green Book" by Phil Gorden

Jonathan Little has written a set of tournament books that are relevant to modern poker, strongly recommend them to you once you understand the poker fundamentals.
