So, here is a little bit of background info on my end, get ready, this is a long read!

So I started playing real money, lets say a little over a month ago. My girlfriend wanted me to teach her, because I had recently won a home game. While teaching her, I had realized how much fun this game was, and that's where it started.

I read a large portion of a few books, and went to my first live tourney. played tight and lost to a couple of villains.
Took a week off, read only a little bit more and started to play online.
I put in $80 on betonline. lost it that night, within hours, I had won a few small tourneys and saw the one up tourneys (they looked enticing). I was playing way out of my BR and when I was down to $10 that night, I had let my tilt get to me and lost it in a hand because of my earlier annoyance.

I told myself, next time you play, you play tighter and play smaller blinds, cheaper tourneys.
Day 2 of online: I put in another $50.
I listen to myself, and even won a $3 entry tourney (which was way too high for my BR), and went up to $180... felt like I was a pro and lost it.
I tell myself, lets not do this again, and give it another go. At this point I'm not caring about the money (which by the way as a college student with no job is ridiculous to acquire), I just loved playing, every little bit of it!

I put in another $35, go up to $150, I let it sit for a day and then I get aggressive the next day and play bigger tourneys with larger entry fees.

By now, I haven't left my laptop aside from going to school, and eat and see people a couple of times, this is terrible for me, as I have another passion (mma) that I have been completely ignoring for the possibility of winning "that big pot".

I end up losing that last bit of money, and try carbon poker instead, why not?
I deposit my first $50 on there
I do good for a while, and then play too long and go on tilt and lose it all.. now I am her.

At this point, I tell myself I'm going to take a month and a half off, learn the game, focus on other things, so I can moderate the habit better on the next run.

~My noted mistakes so far:
~Not taking my BR into account (playing too high)
~Playing far too long
~Disregarding everything else
~Letting myself go on tilt
~Anything else you could

I'm wondering, what should I do next time? What should I do between now and then? Do you recommend any good books (NL tourney/NL cash)?
Anything else you could help me with! I want to be a poker player, not a gambler...
Thank you!

Don't play under 18 is the first lesson lol. May be wrong, but you mentioned going to school.
When you catch yourself being on tilt just close the poker client, except you are in a tournament with some big blinds. That way, just try to clear your mind.

I will recommend to play a lot of freerolls. Give you fair training and a chance of building a bankroll.

I made a fair bankroll based on freerolls.

I'm sure at micro tournaments it's higher, but in real events I'm saying $100+ BI, the best players (literally the best not how everyone thinks they're the best) cash around 11% of their entries.

So take that into consideration with your BRM. If you were one of the elite, and you played tournaments with 10% of your roll you have a great shot at going busto.

You can artificially increase your ITM% through less optimal play and surviving through the bubble, but generally these players with higher cash rates actually have a lower ROI since they so rarely go deep for a good cash.

It sounds like you're still very new overall and I'd suggest getting on forums and reading as much as you can about tournament poker. Decide a niche to focus on at first. MTT's, 1-table SnG's, 180-man SnG's, whatever your thing is. Work on getting really good at that, then expand to other types of tournaments as you improve.

Good luck

Haha no, I'm in college! But still a full time student with a hard major :)

And, yeah honestly to the rest and your comment at the end, I do fine when I start my day off and then don't know how to let go of the whole thing, I figure doing a FR every here and again to start from scratch can really put value on how I use it. And knowing how to moderate my game as a whole

Try not to be so result oriented and went on tilting right after that.Poker is a games of variances, you win some and lose some. But the most important thing is to remain focus for the long term.
