I went out playing in the online tourney last night with this hand and I have to say I never even thought about this happening. I was going to post in the bad beats section (because I think it was a bad beat, but be interested to know if others agree) but anyway I did learn something so I'm posting here instead. I had pocket 9's and called a raise pre flop. Heads up. the flop came 5 5 and I think the other card was a 3. The other player bet I think it was about half the pot and having 2 pairs I called. Another 5 came down on the turn which gave me a full house. The other player went all in and I though ok if he has a higher pair he has me beat but I'm not folding so I called. He showed Ace 2 and I thought great he was bluffing I've won. Then unbelievably another 5 comes on the river making four 5's on the board and he beats my full house with a single Ace, because the Ace plays. I must say I thought for a moment it could at least be a split pot because we both had four 5's but apparently the Ace played. Oh well.

You had a full house on the turn.

On the river, you both had quad 5s. You with 55559 and your opponent with 5555A.

You didn't lose with a full house, you lost with quads vs quads because kicker plays.

Amanda, that's called bad luck! seems like your opponent was bluffing, but got very luck with te quad 5's on the table and Ace kicker! Keep playing, chances of getting 4 equal cards on the table again are 1 in a biljion.

Thanks Lexie! Yes, you are right. Actually one of the things I like about poker is the twists and turns. Almost anything can happen and sometimes does. :)

Yup, in some cases all that is needed is an A in the hole as a kicker, because the nut is already on the board. Kickers are something you should pay a lot of attention to, not that you could in this case, but having a low kicker can mess you up pretty bad.

New players often forget this and shove because they think they have the upper hand, then someone has the same hand but with a A, or K, etc. (just higher) kicker and takes the pot.

Kickers matter, a lot.

Greetz.

Just my own sobering experience. I had QT, he had AA, the flop was 8QT. At this point I'm 72% favored to win. I pushed, he called. The turn brought another T, so now my full house is 95.5% favored to win. Of course, the river brought the 4.5% card, an A.

I'd been having a bad game up to this point. Can it get any worse? Of course it can. I'm a big believer in playing the odds till it's clear that blind luck has taken over. Time to go do some chores.

I would agree that is a tough way to lose and very unlikely. Look to protect your hand on the flop or turn by betting or raising. An overpair of 9's is quite good in that situation but vulnerable to overcards.

Make sure you make a note on that player that he chases with shyte and exploit it next time you think you have them beat.

What was his kicker if you can remember.

Oh dear, that's kind of cruel :D Well, stupid things happen! Would be interesting when it was in tournament because a raise with A2 in an early stage would be just like gambling...

Good luck, the next full house is yours... ;-)

That, I think, is a bad beat. Calling a bluff and losing sucks.

It made me remember my favourite bad beat-- I was playing on 888poker cash game. Flop appeared and I had Flush, higher card ACE. Now my only remaining RIVAL played ALLins. I carefully examined and thought he/she would have Higher pair or a Flush mostly by King. I too called him. Now Pokergods had blessing over my rival as turn and river came 9 9 and he had Four of a kind against my Flush and I lost 350 hardcore cash.
What a Joke...

The opponent must have thought that you have nothing. If it was me with an Ace in pocket I wouldn't have called you on the turn. It's bad luck that you lost on the river. Ace is a kicker and there was four of a kind on the table. Also on the river you should have folded because 5 is not a kicker. Good luck on your next tournament buddy! :)

I would rather play right and lose than to play wrong and win
RoW Champ 2014. Congrats Allen for ToTW

I copied the above saying from a post above. I have to disagree with this statement. There have been so many times I have played right and have lost, so the times I win when I have played in err they never make up the times I played right and lost. to err is human. If I was perfect would I be playing freerolls and micro games????
