I would be interested to know if you guys think freerolls are good for the game of poker.

I am becoming more and more convinced that they are not necessarily good. I understand the premise. A freeroll is an opportunity for people that may not have been able to build a bankroll to play and qualify for events or even begin to build that bankroll up.

That said, as I watch these games I have realized that freerolls tend to promote bad play. Then as these players move on to the event they qualified for or they play some other levels with the money they earned in the freeroll that bad play is still there. Now they are up against better players that know how to exploit these types of players and they are pushed out quickly.

The reason I think this is maybe not so good for the game is that the players that are not able to make it in the next level because of the bad play they learned in the freeroll, now blames the site as making them "unlucky"... So many times I hear "f'ing site... the best hand always loses." When in actuality they are shoving 20 BB's with pocket 4's and getting called with mathematically better hands than theirs.

It seems like if these players had an opportunity to play/see good poker before they learn from the freerolls then everyone would be a lot happier, and the poker sites might actually see more traffic.

What are your thoughts?

For me freerolls are good but hard to win. Luck has big influence in game. Most players go all in on any card but if you suceed you can play MTTs for real money. But its a great opportunity to learn especcially if you are in middle/late stage of the tournamnet

Freerolls are just good for practice, nothing more. So many players go all in preflop with garbage , its not poker. CC freerolls are much better ( freeroll club ), but others are ridicilous.

well depends what freerolls you play?
Freerolls like 500$ or 1000$ with less than 100 players is not like 10$ with 10000 players
I like freerolls :)

I think you greatly overestimate the number of players who can build a bankroll through Freerolls. People are too impatient. The freerolls are just a teaser to get them to deposit.

However the CC freerolls are definitely worthwhile.

edit: the freerolls must be causing people to deposit because the poker sites can analyze whether or not freeroll winners deposit money.

i think some freerolls are a great place to practice-i belong to another poker forum and they have a freeroll league-it was pionted out this past week on this forum that sharkscope rated those league games at 4 sharks kinda unheard of for freeroll-im sure cc freerolls arent much different, ive never checked there games at sharkscope thou-some freerolls that the poker sites host are complete shove fests with liltle to nothing to learn-while it does make it possible to start a bankroll with out depoing-honing your skills in some frolls just doesnt work

Freerolls are awesome wastes of time. Taking forever but making real money.

Without freerolls, I would have shut down internet poker after the 2006 gov thing.

I agree with this completely.. If you consider a site where the average FR cash was 50 cents, you'd need to get ITM of several dozen tourneys to have an even somewhat reasonable BR for 2NL.

I didn't like to play freerolls , because is a lot of players registred who play very bad , but they getting lucky. Well if you playing freerolls you're thinking that you didn't invested anything on this event so why not to try to risk on many situations.
Anyway CC freerolls are the best!

If you learn to play freerolls, the tournament buy-in will be easier to play. There's less craziest.

First thing that you need to realize is that freerolls are NOTHING MORE THAN PROMO'S !

They are advertising. They are not there because the site owners are such great guys and just love to give money away. There to get you (us) to deposit real money and play with it. While some have played with never having deposited, and done pretty damn good, most haven't.

You should also understand that not everyone in every freeroll is a rank beginner. A few are, sure, but I think there are more fairly well knowledgeable players. Maybe they are just fooling around, maybe they are bored, maybe they are trying out something new to them.:D

Definetely a better form of entertainment than going into town and spending tons. Good for the domestic life in a sense. Let's face it, doing the math there are jobs that pay more per hour than time invested in a freeroll. As a distraction, its great. Bragging rights are cool, too.

It's a crapshoot early on ...but if you can survive the all-in donks, etc. and get deep, then you'll get some good poker play.

You need to make diference btw freeroll and mtt, even btw low buy in and real buy in...iff it is for free people don't care...i like to play against usual play...freerols tight, and biger buyins loose and agressive...

well, they are both sides of the story of the freerolls, good and bad
in a long term, if you playing only freerolls for fun, it's great time spent and you're enjoying what are you doing, for a hobby player... you know what I mean
for the other players, who want to join the game, test the water, spill the beans, play few hands with "real" $$$, and if they win something in the freerolls, great, they learned the few things about poker, odd's, calculation, pot, 3b.... and if they have enough desire to move on from the freerolls and apply the learned skills in bankroll management, starting really low and moving up the ladder, great.
If they lose everything, they can start from 0 again.

Few years ago, "Jeesus" Ferguson did freeroll play from $0 to $10K, it took him a while, but with applied math, odds, strict BR management, etc...

Most of us here are seasonal players, amateurs, hobby players, some are better than others and win some really cash, and some enjoy to play freerolls just for fun...

I wish you the best luck and have fun on CC freerolls

I believe freerolls give the opportunity to players who have not yet deposited real money and start to believe that poker can become a form of lucrative Hooby and develop your mind to develop more and more in the game and thus make a deposit to take this more seriously during leisure time.

In my opinion, freerolls are definitely worth it. You get to learn or work on your game risk free. Just because everyone else is doing it( going all in with nothing, betting crazy) does not mean you have to. I do not.think it will cause bad habits unless you let it. P . S. Since January I have made about 70 bucks from freerolls. And I'm a noob player. Just be patient and play an ABC TAG style game and.You should do fine. See ya at the tables. Tal
