Hey all,

My question to you is this; do you think learning poker in free rolls will form bad habits due to the reckless play style of most participants? Also, what advice do you have for beating the odds and winning free and micro stakes tournaments at the beginning of building a bankroll?

You have to know that freeroll or micro stakes tournament isn't realy poker game. Your opponents don't understand your signe, the meaning of each bet, raise that you make,...

To win this tournament, you have to have some luck of course, a realy close range of oppening and a lot of self control against tilt.

Good luck

At the earliest stage dont get involve with all-in unless you got premium.

Playing a freerole is almost the same as playing for play money. Nobody at the tables seem to have a clue what they are doing and everyone loves to throw chips away because they never paid for them. I dont think you could learn much from playing them at all.
The best thing to do would be only play premium hands at the start and dont call any all-ins without a really good hand.

I think if youre a new player you should play freerolls but play them like youre playing tournament for real money. Then there wont be any bad habits for u.
Well if youre playing a freeroll in the early stage you have to play tight but if u have a good card you must put all in for double up. In micro stakes MTT i recommend SnG cuz there are less players than in MTT. But also you need to be very carefull.

Freerolls are a good proving ground and an excellent place to start for beginners

I think if you can negotiate your way through these minefields and get decent finishes then it can actually improve your play. Just remember that at higher stakes people will be playing smarter and less reckless and you should adjust accordingly

I think the worst bad habit you can pick up is going all in too often... Whilst it's quite acceptable and often necessary in Freerolls, In slower paced deeper stack tourneys it might be a a bit Fishy :)

Of course... Some exclusive Freerolls like the ones here on Cardschat play out much more professionally ! Well worth playing if you can make the grade...

You'll see players shoving all-in pre with rubbish like QJh, KQo, A6o, etc into unopened pots early in the tourney. Other stupid stuff like that.

This is not normal in tourneys with thinking players.

Freerolls can teach you to play super-tight (which I highly recommend doing).

Playing Freeroll tourney

Playing these will not help improve my tourney play based upon how reckless the players play in the beginning?

Improve skills in playing freeroll

You may improve your skills in poker even in freerolls ,you just need to use another strategy in the beginning.

Like the others, you can improve your game even in freerolls. Just don't let yourself play the same as the bingo players. You will see them winning early, and then dropping out later in the game.

Exactly. After that very complicated to re-form your play to real cash, even 1/2c. And I feel sorry a little that I have played freerolls too much a long time. Now I can't play cash. It may be worth to not build your bankroll from zero, make min deposit and play micro cash at once.

Personally, on the early levels and since nobody cares cuz is a freeroll i open shove all my premiums holdings preflop, even 75bb-150bb effective stacks, you´ll be amazed how often people will call you with all sort of weird stuff.

The level and style of playing free tournaments do not vary much with the micros. Even in expensive tournaments like the Sunday Million on pokerstars a lot of weak players who play like maniacs. So to build a bankroll do not depart from playing in freerolls and gradually increase it rising on limits.

Freerolls and Micros

Freerolls and micros have a lot of donks in a 700 people tourny or more poker do'nt start until the last 100. See surviving the donks to get to the top 100 is prolly the best way to learn. One thing good is there is only 100 you have to worry about.

the best way to play is tight only play top hands one you get down to like the two tables 18 left then you can play a little loser.

Just play strong hands at the beginning. Avoid going all in unless you have a strong hand and can go heads up with someone you know has been shoving with week hands.

I think a lot of it has to do with time management for the freerolls. Especially at the beginning, if they have a decent hand and shove all in, they might build an early stack worth building up with care, at worst, they bust out and don't have to spend the next few hours playing. At best they're slightly ahead and can tighten up and play better later on.

Don't all in when you have some chips.
Don't tilt.
On middle phase start risking, drawing then keep tight when win.
Don't even try to make read on opponents. It's mostly gamblers, bad players with unpredictable reactions.

No, the basics are the basics. Then after that you figure out what works or what doesnt based on success levels.
