Folding instead of checking

I noticed a few players folding instead of checking after the flop.

So they are already in the pot. There is no bet. They could check and see the trun but instead they fold.

Even if there hole cards are no good there is still they possibility of a pair on the turn and even a trip on the river so why fold when there is no cost to stay in and see what happens?

I noticed the same thing, but usually just early on in MTT's so I don't know if there's a strategy there or if it's just people that don't know what they're doing. I'd say check if you know you don't have anything whenever you have the chance to see more cards but if you have high cards and everyone else is checking go ahead and try a raise and see what happens you'd might get lucky and everyone folds because nothing is worse than sitting on KA and losing to a set of deuces that might be on the flop. But to answer you're question no I'm pretty sure there's no real benefit to folding when checking is an option.

They increase for only two reasons (clear smart player) by value, it is representing that he is in the front has a hands, or by bluff, I do not see it so wrong to do this, everything depended on the table, and the opposites, You need chips to win, so use some strategy to get more and more. .

I think that the opponents with marginal hands did not "caught" on the flop, and in order not to show their pocket cards on the showdown - therefore, make a fold on the flop.

They are fishing players. You do not need good cards or wait for a pair to appear on the table to play and win the pots.

If this happens at your table, you should mark them with notes (fish) hahaha

There is no advantage to folding and missing out on a free card. Unless you are so afraid that the card might hit you and you will do something dumb, but if that were the case, you should not be playing this game at all.

If it's online, and you're not seeing the same player do it again and again - it may just be the result of mis-clicking.

I have made a mistake once or twice where I folded instead of checked.

No this was one guy at the table who folded quite a few times in half an hour.

I do this when I play when I've completely missed or have no real strong draws/re-draws to go for against multiple players. I just want to move the hand along as fast as possible.

This happens usually in SB when I complete with an ok-ish hand or BB when I check my option.

But how would checking instead of folding slow down the hand ?

There is no good reason for folding when you are able to check. If someone does it live, when it is obvious there is no bet, I immediately assume they are a fish. When it happens online, I think the first time could be a misclick but more than once and I assume fish.

In my home games, I discourage folding when there is no bet. But, these days my home game is a penny stakes game with my son and his cousins and friends. It's more about fun and learning.

I dont see any advantage to folding before the river if there are no bets.
On pokerstars you are not even allowed to do this, unless the option is hidden somewhere.

Open folding is a fishy move that you find mostly in free rolls or it just a miss click. Don't pay much attention to it.

There is no advantage in folding instead of checking, when someone does it it's probably a missclick.

The option to fold in Pokerstars, when you can check, does not exist any more. I regret this, because I find, that I could fold before show down, so nobody sees the hand that I have played. The less they know about me, the better for me.

^That is a fair point.

The guys I saw folding several times when they could check were doing so before the river so I think that would make them more likely 'fish'

But why would you fold a winning hand? On pokerstars you muck your hand automatically by default at showdown.

^what if you are the winner at a heads up showdown?

Do you get to see the losers hand?

What if there are 3 players at the showdown, do you see both losers hands?

Hands are revealed in order, if a hand does not beat the previous hand it is mucked by default, you can choose to show one or the two cards if you want

Eh, I guess it doesn't as far as game play goes. Personally, it's just something I don't have to pay attention to.

When I play, I'm usually multitasking, so if it's a hand that I really don't care about or I'm not going to continue with, I just fold and be done with it. Theres really no need to keep it open and check down my options when I'm not going to win the hand.

I'm talking about extreme situations where I have something like 24o in the BB on a board of 9KJ suited (i don't have a suit) against multiple players. No need for me to check it down and wait for the hand to end. I just fold and go back to whatever else I'm doing until the next hand.

If you are in small blind posititon or other early position, your hand will be shown, before showing other stronger hands. It will be hidden only if there is somebody with a stronger hand BEFORE you.

I had accidentally done this the other night. I was playing too many tables at once. I usually only play one or two, and I had poor cards the table popped up while I was playing a good hand on another table. I then clicked fold and when the warning came up that I could check instead of fold, I was going to click check instead but I clicked on fold again instead.
Weird that he kept doing it.

Sometimes that happens accidentally, but not on Stars as it's not an option there anymore.
I rarely do that when i am on blinds in a multi-way limped pot & I missed entirely and don't want this hand to distract me from other tables :/ Though it's fun when you don't have a hand not even something like K-high and the player openfolds :hahaha:
