Hi,

Newbie here..got this question that has been 'bugging' me..

My card - 7d 8c off suit

Pre flop - 6s 9s King(h)
In this case, what's are the percentage me hitting a straight and an opponent hitting a flush? I read somewhere that the percentage hitting a flush is higher than a straight...which i am little confused as flushes cards are higher, hence lower chances?

River - 6s 9s kh 2d
Same as the question above .. is this worth persuing to call the bet regardless what size of the pot knowing the opponent is trying to hit a flush on the river and me trying for a straight..

9 outs to a flush
8 outs to an open-ended straight draw

% of chance of you hitting your draw w oesd on flop (by the river) is ~32%
% of chance of hitting a flush w a FD on flop (by the river) is ~36%

How your hand rates vs. their's 'depends' as he's likely to have overcards for pr. outs as well as just the FD.

While you do have 8 outs to make a straight, if the opponent has a flush draw, it means that two of those outs are dead; i.e. the 5s and Ts both make the straight but lose the pot. So you really only have 6 outs.

Also, when you hit one of those 6 outs, he'll still need to have enough of a hand to pay you off. Otoh, if you hit one of the dead ones, it will be hard not to pay him off since he could have various non-flush hands that the straight does beat.

The odds of getting a flush draw to begin with are lower than getting a straight draw.... you'll get straight draws more often than flush draws, so thats why flushes are higher hands than straights. (to answer your second question)

flushes you need 5 of 13 cards in your hand...straights you 5 out 20 in your hand that why flushes are worth more to begin with then see arjonius posts
