Hi All,

Ive heard people talking about "Floating" on these forums. Can anyone please explain what is is and where/how it is effective?

Ive read some explanations but I cant see much difference between trying to steal based on representing you are chasing a flush/straight when it does hit and plain bluffing?

Thanks in advance,

Calling the flop to try to take the pot away on a later street. It can be done with equity or without.

So is "having a plan to steal on a later street" what differentiates it from just being a calling station?

I've sometimes deliberately asked the dealer "how much is in the pot" so it looks like im calculating pot odds of chasing a flush, then to take it down after the turn or river when it hits and i didnt really have it at all. So this is floating?

Being a calling station means you call down with any piece and hang on for dear life.

Assuming you called bets/raises on earlier streets with just this intention, then yes.

Being a calling station means you call down with any piece and hang on for dear life.

Difference beatween calling station and floating is you're going to play your hand aggressively on later streets after calling bets on earlier ones whereas a calling station is just going to call every street. No aggression really.

If you do start floating don't just do it for the sake of it, take into account board texture and opponents range and your perceived range.

If you use a HUD you should also look at fcbet vs tcbet stats. There are a lot of people who rightly cbet like 80%+ but then only bet the turn with TP+ (tcbet ~30%). They're good candidates to float. Just make sure you have enough hands to know that the numbers you're basing your play on are accurate.
