Being a not so good player I find it really hard to make out if a player is good or bad. I sometimes end up loosing big pots to those i thought were the fish but they end up in the top of the leader board.

So how can i find out a player is actually good or not and minimize my loss and maximize profits?

Thanks :D

You can install PT4 or HM2. The information on the HUD tells you precise details about your opponents' playing tendencies, and understanding these stats can make a huge difference in your win rate. It is the only way.

Are there any HUDs besides PT4 or HM2? Maybe free editions?

I was thinking more of developing my own skills rather than relying on software but yeah I'll give it a try. Are there free versions available too rather than just trials?
Thanks

LOL it was exactly the same for me
I couldn't understand who is who LOL
even when i bought HM - i couldn't understand stats propely
most info you need is VPIP and PFR - 50 hands is ok to analise.
VPIP >30 (40 is real fish) PFR 0
Usually fish has high VPIP and very low PFR

Watch what type of hands they raise with and what type of hands they call raises with. At showdown when they win or loose, how aggressive were they betting? what type of hand did they have? Were they betting/calling with a draw? Did they have a solid hand at the flop? Are they playing hands out of position?

Asking yourself these questions and comparing their hands to yours will let you know what type of player they are and where you would stand in any given hand.

you can take notes and/or use sharkscope or pokertableratings.com

Sharkscope.

Here's your answers ^ ^

(helped you out so you won't have to filter out the rest of the responses)

... OP mentioned 'leaderboard' in their post which leads me to believe they're referring to tournament play.

I dont like the software either.. Sometimes its good but sometimes you cant play just looking only at this.. You really need to prove your skills to get higher in tournaments.

Im not using any software either.

Fish is usually a loose, passive type of player while shark is usually a tight, aggro type player but can mutate because he is thinking.

Another quick way to find out if someone is decent is check to see if their playing multiple tables (and have 150+ BBs on each table) that probably means they know what they're doing.

There are reg fish out there too though. Usually you can tell a player is good if they are playing tight aggressive or loose aggressive and winning a lot of pots without showdown. They don't overplay their hands and have a general idea when they are beat.

If it's a cash game it only takes a few orbits to find the fish. For tournaments you can tell because they limp a lot of pots. Or they are too tight and blind out .
