First venture to real money

I had $10 from freeroll cashes but gave five to a friend to fool around with so with only $5 I say what why not have a little fun,if I lose $2 I can stop and go back to freerolls

So five minutes later at the shallow stack tables I lost the $2(2.5BI),turns out i'm not as zen as I thought I was because I couldnt just leave it at that so I became a super nit and three hours later I had my money back and a 37 cent profit.

Then I saw the .30+.05 sat to the BLT and figured if I lose i'll still be up a very impressive 2cent for the day so I registered not realizing that it only payed the top 2(and people rag on play chips but i've had much harder games there)so I make it to final two as chip leader, board comes K99 I have A9(nuts right,think again) he had K9 which crippled me beyond recovery so I ended the day up 52 cent which I very proud of.

it takes a long time and many reloads to be a break even player let alone a winning one.

But of course it could take a very long time to lose all the money, or it could be fast, either way you will gain invaluable knowledge and experience.

But I heard of rumors, whispers really..., stories and legends that speak of players that have picked up the game and ran with it. Usually these players are friends of really good players and get the inside scope, but it can be done.

lol,I thank you for your responses(as grim as they may have been) but I think my point was misunderstood.
I don't yet play for money still fine tuning my game through freerolls I was just killing time and wanted to get a feel for where I was at while only risking money that took about 4hrs to get and wanted to share that story but again thanks for the responses

You are NOT 100 percent guaranteed to lose your money, but you're going to have to hope you start on a good streak and dont get sucked out on until you've won a bit more, and dont let tilt get to you! Stick at it good luck

My advice would be to look at some of the other small satellites for practice. You really don't gain too much from play chip practice after getting the basics down.

One I would suggest on FTP are the satellites to the Daily Dollar. They are Turbo format, which can be a little more challenging for a beginner, but not that bad for a 9-player set up. Also, the top three places pay (sort of). It is a $0.25 + $0.05 entry fee with first and second getting "entry into the DD" and third getting their $0.25 back.

If you finish in the top two, you can unregister from the DD and they give you a Tournament Dollar. You can use that $1T to enter three more DD satellites or try your luck is a higher level.

Even though I have established a decent bank roll form my initial investment, I will still sometimes play the DD Satellites if I am short on time or just want to mess around and not be serious. I'm sure there are others like me who might not be as focused on the $0.25 as you. Look for that and take advantage from people playing loose/poorly in those. You might double your $10 before you know it!

You were playing Heads Up in the Sat to BLT?

I would suggest a good place to dip your toe into real money poker
would be in low stakes sit and go's, some sites have $0.10 and $0.25
games which is a great place to learn a bit about real money poker without
losing a load of cash

I played the free tables for a good while and then I remember playing
my first ever real money table with a $5 buy in and I think it took me
all of 6 hands to lose it.

As someone else said you dont really learn anything playing on free tables
and can pick up some bad habits that will be hard to shift when you switch
to real money play

Another good way is to play on the lowest stake tables, there are $0.01-$0.02 tables where it would take you the best part of an hour to lose $1 and my advice would be when you do start playing for real money is remember two things,1/ play tight, play only premium starting hands, learn quickly that Ace rag will cost you a lot in the long run. 2/ be aggressive, get into the habit of raising rather than limping in or calling.

If you remember those two things you wont go far wrong

You can learn from free games. Going to real money is the same as moving up in stakes. Of course it is a big jump but I am willing to bet that there are a lot of players that have done well at high play money stakes that can hold their own in the lowest of the micros.

If you pickup bad habits in 01/02 does this mean you can never play 05/10?

Stay within your comfort zone and you should be ok i find the 30c sats to the DD are good to build up from a micro roll top 3 get the dollar entry and u can unreg for the $T and the level is very fishy

But every time you feel confident, which from everyone else's POV would look overconfident, you need to stick an ice pick in your ear, and hit it with a 30 pound sledgehammer.

I disagree with those who say you are bound to go broke. I've only ever made 1 deposit on PS ($50) and have played a whole year on that. Along the way I've moved from 2nl up to 25nl which is where I'm at now. Never came close to going broke. Along the way I had to tap into my BR once for personal expenses and withdrew $300. I still have a $600ish BR. All from a $50 deposit. Now, I'm FAR from good at the game. That's not the point. Point is, play within your BR and you need not ever go broke.

Agree with this 110%. The downswings that I have had almost always came from when I thought I had this game figured-out and that I could win regardless of what cards/style I played. Develope your game slowly, stick to good BRM = success.

This isn't necessarily true.
I started off on DoylesRoom '07 with zero, cashed for $2 in a freeroll & ran it up to over $400 in a few mos., playing at first 10cent sng's.
I've also built up another pokersite account from a $5 freeroll cash to over $750, always using good BRM.

I know of others who've done wayyyyyy better than that for themselves, starting off with nothing, winning a couple bucks in a freeroll & then slowly but surely, running it up to a decent bankroll.

To OP, you can do it!! Just depends really upon how much time you want to spend on learning the game imo. Good Luck!!!

I thank you all for your continued support and to PO I am very passionate about continuing to learn and grow as a player. It may be cheesy but I agree with that full tilt commercial that says "we learn the most the nights we lose"

OP, don't even listen to this nonsense. You are up in profit. True it's only a few pennies, but up is up. Take your time, have patience, review your sessions to look for leaks (if you don't have tracking software, just save your HH's to your hard drive and manually review them), and with a little bit of luck you can easily make a large BR out of $5.

Probably the numer 1 mistake people make is playing waaaay above their bankroll. Ask me how i know lol.

If you play fundamentally sound poker and play at the right stakes with a sufficient bankroll the chances of going broke are slim.

i would advise more than 5 bucks to start tho. since your still learning your going to have variance and days when the cards dont fall your way you need cushion in your bankroll to withstand it. also the reason why its KEY to play within your limits.

just need to decide if you wanna take the tournament route or cash game route. I prefer cash games myself.

i have found at the micro .01/.02 and even .02/.05 just playing basic tight aggressive poker will win you money. seems like most people at that level either arent very good or dont take it seriously. makes for somewhat easy money.

with sitngos being so popular now they arent as easy to win and im personally not a fan of them.
