Hi everyone!

I plan on entering a poker tournament at my local casino sometime in August. Although I have played cash games there, it will be my first time in a tournament setting.

Their website doesn't offer too much information regarding the structure or organization of the tournament, so I was wondering if people wouldn't mind sharing their experiences, tips and suggestions!

The only information I know is that it isn't a bounty tournament.

As always, thanks in advance, and I look forward to your response.

Hello guy.

In my city the tournaments work as follows: It has the BuYin rate, the rebuy lasts until the late register (average 3h), and after the interval has the Add-on if you want.
The blinds are 30mins. And you start with an initial stack of 100bbs.
These are the tournaments I normally play.

Now regarding the part of the gameplay, if your tournament is with Blinds 30m-1h .. you can play more cautious, bet in position and with relatively good hands, without being in a hurry to double your chips.

As you pass the time and tightening the blinds you play with more hands.

Try to act the same every time you make a play, and really try to pay attention to your opponents movements.

Thanks for all the responses! I was unable to find any reviews or information online so I'm going to give them a call about how early to show up and buy a ticket and how long I normally lasts!

I am in a similar journey just have played two live tournaments on city. The big difference is that there is no automatic math like the pot size, you need to have more attention with this kind of staff.

You will not just push a button and make a bet 50% of the pot you need to do the math and than act. This is the first step, start to play as you play online. you need more patience because the hands came more slowly.

Good luck in your new journey through the live world.

You really need to investigate what the structure is going to be. Live poker is slow. You see a lot less hands which is why in many live tournaments the blinds are long. It is really important to stay ahead of the blinds and keep fold equity. If you play a tournament with short blinds, you really need to be prepared to take a lot more chances to say ahead of the blinds.

I've found more information concerning the blinds, and it says

"Blind bets every 20 minutes"

Is this just another way to say that blinds increase every 20 minutes?

Also, there is mention of an optional 5$ tip for dealers. Would it be bad mannered to not provide this tip?

Thanks

Analyze the players well, work well on the vision they have about you, if you change the table avoid playing, meet the players first, then go up.

Yes, that means the blinds move every 20 mins. To me, this is pretty fast and I would play a looser game.

I would not tip a dealer unless I cash (usually people tip in cash games if they win a big pot). They are paid by the hour, don't feel bad...

Had a great time last night even though I lost fairly quickly. Played for about 2 hours and ended up getting eliminated around 50th, 63 entries and 105 total buy-ins after rebuys finished. Played a little too timidly considering the cards I was getting were cold. Top hands I got dealt were AK suited and 99.

Decided to sit down at a 1-2 cash game while I waited for my friends who were in the tournament. Won back my tournament buy-in and a little extra so broke even for the night!

Looking forward to giving another tournament a try sometime to see if I do any better and if it was a fluke, or maybe I should just stick with cash games!

Thanks to everyone who offered advice in this thread, it was all very helpful!
