I am so tired of all the Black Friday talk. I wish everyone would just calm down and get back to basics.Switch to another site 'til the dust settles.
Anyway, I do not use PT3 or HEM, but when I listen to strategy podcasts, sometimes a speaker will refer to or describe a player as a 16-14 or some other two number combination(the numbers usually are in the teens). Does anyone know what they are referring two when the describe players this way? What do those two numbers represent? That is my biggest peeve, when these experts get on these podcasts and make references to things that may be above the head of the people who would actually benefit from their expertise. If only they could take it down a notch. They assume you have a HEM and the commentator perpetuates the conversation. Okay, I'm done bitching, I'd really appreciate if anyone knows what those two numbers mean?

Thanks,
FITEMAN

The first number is their VPIP% (Voluntarily Put Money in the Pot). This is where they put money in pre-flop and the blinds are not included in this.

The second number is Pre-flop Raise and is the % of times that someone raises.

So a 16/14, is some who puts money into the pot preflop 16% of the time and Raises 14% of the time.

Sean hit the definition. But as far as your comment about them taking it down a notch, it isn't that they are doing anything wrong, but if you don't know what VPIP or PFR are, then you are listening/reading something that is way above your head and you should be reading/listening to something a lot more basic that you can actually benefit from. They are gearing those podcasts not to beginners, but to people who know the very common poker terminology already and how to apply it. You don't go into a lecture about rocket science and expect to know anything about what they're talking about when you've never even taken a basic physics or chemistry class... this is the same thing.

Also, with everything with Black Friday, I agree that all of the people posting the exact same new threads as someone else posted like 5 minutes ago is annoying, but this is one of the biggest shake-ups in the online poker community, so it is to be expected. I'm assuming you weren't around when UIGEA passed, or you would know the exact same thing happened.

Your analogy about rocket science is little off

Absoluthamm,

It's more like I wouldn't go to a chemistry class and expect to hear a lecture about advanced rocket science terms. I might like chemistry but dislike rockets, whereas the reverse would be impossible. With that grasp on logic, I can see where you may feel that you need PokerTracker. I listen to many podcasts and for the most part they are not even anywhere near being over my head nor are they normally overloaded with tracking software jargon. Usually they consist of just good solid poker talk. What bothers me is when a guest will pepper his segment with cryptic numbers, terms and abbreviations that are like a foreign language to those of us who know poker but not PokerTracker. I' m sorry if you misunderstood me.

Sean,

I was thinking thats what they meant, but I just wasn't sure. Thanks for the heads up. That's what makes this site so great.

There are many levels of poker expertise and knowledge. To find someone (for example in a podcast) who caters to the somewhat more knowledgeable and experienced player as a slight against the more amateurish and hobby type player is a waste of time IMO. It is the responsibility of the player to familiarize him or herself with the basic vocabulary of the game. If a player has no time for that, why is it the responsibility of the speaker to adjust the technical depth of their message?

This seems like a podcast directed towards players that can benefit from it, so no need to explain or simplify terminology, as the target audience will get it. Saying a player is "16/12" or whatever is going to mean somethong to the serious player whether he uses a HUD or not.
