....and this may be true because a beginner is looking for verbal validation of his/her thinking process?

"The Four Bad Things Amateur Poker Players Say"

I was just reading this article about the "The Four Bad Things Amateur Poker Players Say". It is a very interesting read, since I am an amateur player. I have found my self thinking some of those bad things. I will become more conscious of them now and hope to improve my way of thinking in my games.

"If you are an amateur player who wants to improve, the first step is to root out the fuzzy thinking that’s in your game. If you find yourself thinking and saying the things I listed, it’s time to rework your game. ♠"

it is very nice you have that conscience. There are a lot of bad things that normally amateur players do. And it is important to do an effort to avoid that.

First thought that comes to mind is "just four?"

But yeah there's a ton of logic fallacies out there, and not just by amateurs although they are obv the worst offenders.

He left out one, Bear, "nice hand" over and over lol every hands a nice hand that wins. The new players say that so much it drives me nuts. Once in awhile, with a hand like A-A versus K-K, and the kings win might be ok, or a huge pot with players holding very good hands and a big hand wins, but geeez, every hand get's pretty old quick.

5. "I have low suited connectors in BB with an EP raiser and 4 callers, I'm good to call, my cards are live, I'm in."

Thanks. That was a good read.

Here's my Favourite bits ...

  • Amateurs tend to oversimplify the game
  • You cannot systematically reduce the risk and still play a strong game.
  • Point 3 is so good, you will have to go read it yourself. :p
  • If you intentionally try to reduce your variance, you must accept that you will never play well.
  • Yet amateur players draw wild conclusions
  • Most of the time, you can’t legitimately draw these conclusions on just a single day’s worth of play. Yet amateurs do it all the time.

I never really noticed before, but you're so right about that, Mel!. Maybe I'm gonna "NH" you a ton the next time we table ;)

A common leak among new players (and quite a few experienced ones too) is thinking they're capable of doing more at the table than they're actually able to do *profitably*.

I often do the mistake in point 3 when he came up with QQ example. And when villian folds to my re-raise I wonder if I could played it more profitable.

Holding on to Top pair weak kicker is pot committed playing every hand because poker in general is boring. Fold 85% of your hands period
