One thing I tell myself, don't think in terms of money while playing poker. It will influence your game negatively.

Play your game and just think of the chips as just chips, not dollars.

Or look at is as a buy-in.

Lets say you play MTTs and have a BR of $110. If you follow a 100x buy-in BRM plan, you can play $1.10 MTTs.

If you bust out of 20 MTTs, instead of looking at it as you lost $22, look at is as you lost 20 buy-ins and you have 80 left.

Looking at it as losing money could have a negative impact on your game. And looking at it as buy-ins is relative to the stakes you're playing. It doesn't matter if you're playing $1 MTTs or $10 MTTs, if you have 100 buy-ins and lose 20, you still have 80 left.

Great advice, it's also important to set short term goals that you can achieve, like making less mistakes, improving your decisions. That way you don't loose the motivation to play.

I play percentages. For example my goal every session I play cash is to, at a minimum, win 20% of max buy-in. Let's say I buy in to a $.05/.10 table where max buy-in is usually 100x the bb so $10.00 If my very minimum goal is to win 20% every session then my goal is to win $2.00 minimum, that way I am not greedy, because it took me many sessions to learn that greed & poker do not mix. That' not to say I won't keep playing, for example let's say I win my $2.00 on the very 1st hand. Since all of us here love to play poker, myself included, I will most likely continue. If it is a struggle to win 20% then I will definitely stop one I reach that goal. My longest winning streaks using this method is 39 session on Bovada & 27 sessions on ACR.

I agree with this, except I generalize it further to bb (big blinds) or more often SPR. If I have a hand that I am happy to get in with an SPR of 2 heads up on the flop in a 1c/2c game, I am just as thrilled to get it in with an SPR of 2 heads up in a $1/$2 game. Sure, there is 100 times more real money on the line, but the math plays the same. And, generally, I am even happier to get it in with the bigger game because it should be +EV, and the more real money I can invest in any +EV situation, the better.

Agreed that you need to separate the monetary value from your chips at the table. Otherwise you start thinking about what I can afford to do and not what I should do.

I agree with you. It is similar if you are an sport man like a basketball player or boking player. First, you get your skills and then the money.

i disagree and basically think this is a fault many people have online. I play cause i love to play the money follows. I also pay attention to bubble getting into money what my stack is etc.. If get a premium I wont change that and it causes me a lot of heartache lol.

Each dollar counts and should be respected as such. Each buy in etc.. I think you need to have the ability to use money you can light on fire as your poker money meaning dont spend your laundry money on a deposit lol. The money you should play with is money you dont mind losing and if you play cause love the game you should do fine.
