Luck is one of the main factors in poker. You need psycology, maths and you also need luck. Where do you need more luck in tournaments or in ring games?
I believe that you need more luck in ring games because they are more closed games and the pressure is bigger because your stack is changing all the time. In tournaments you play in more tables, you are changing opponents and changes of your stack depend from you final position.

I would say more luck in tournaments. You need to make good decisions and luck out a few times when you don't. Cash games need to be viewed as a long haul. Keep putting yourself in good spots and the percentages will pay you out.

you definitely need more luck in tournaments!! in tournaments you will have to make it through many 50/50 odds wise all ins. And you have to pray for good cards before the blinds come and smack you. So imho it would be tournaments.

Luck can help you much more in tournaments because of the finite amount of chips - cash games allow you to stay in the game as long as you have money

Luck in poker is only illusion. The main thing in this game, which helps you win is your skill. But I can be wrong, since a lot of players win only because of luck)

In cash games you take more chances because you can always rebuy. In tournaments your out and done.

tournaments you can win in ring without luck easier imho and in tournaments as everyone said you get one shot say your running good me the other day signed up hour late in 20 mins had chip lead. Then lost the next four times when had them at flop or even on turn with best hand. Lost half my stack I had just won. It was tough to stomach to be honest running that good and then take the beats I did. In cash might have lost some money there but would not have played the same I figure.

I called all ins with major hands qq ak suited etc.. and they out drew me. Especially on river. So took a walk and wound up winning 400 times my buy in. Big rewards lol for smaller risk in tourneys if you have the right luck:)

Lol, yes but you can just as well sign up for another tournament then with the money you would rebuy in your cashgame :p

However you have more control over the money you invest for a cashgame, rather than when playing a tournament with it... In tournaments the blinds and antes go up so you don't have all the time to be patient and await good results. It's a different game but I like cashgames a lot more... Too bad all big live events are MTTs... I might make the switch someday, only way to really hit the jackpot I guess :p

Luck is like a flow state.
The secret of success is when the level of your skill corresponds to the level of complexity of the game, and depending on this, aggressive bankroll management is built.

I believe more luck for tournament than cash games.

tournament, you are unable to select your opponents, which means, you EV very very depends on your table.

cash game, it is very under your control, you choose to sitting with fish, weak players or whatever, makes the luck less effect your games.
at least, if all other people on that cash game have more skill than you, you may choose NOT TO PLAY. but tournament ...NOT, need to fight until losing last chip.

Variance is bigger in tournaments than in cash games but players are usually better in cash games than in tournaments.

I think luck in poker is only 20%, 80% are experience.

However, sometimes AA losing, 45s.
It`s real life(((

You will need more Luck on Tournaments, is my opinion based on my own experience.

And the Illusionist that said: "Luck in poker is only illusion" has not play enough hands to realize all the crazy turns as bad beads. :deal:

The pro move is to save all your luck up for one big cash hand or a major tournament IMO.

They are different animals - many cash game specialists think tournaments are all luck and vice versa.

Tournaments are higher variance but with a big enough bankroll and enough volume the better players will come out ahead.

In reality the more you play of either the less luck you will need to be profitable. Experience and understanding winning strategies (enough to recognize what bad players are doing wrong and take advantage of their mistakes) will outpace luck in the long-run.

Good luck to you! :D

Save up all your luck? Lol how you gonna do that?

Winning strategies yes, however in MTTs where you don't know your opponents, it will be hard to know when they are making mistakes... Since you cannot see their cards ;). This is why I believe it's much harder to read the game and fine balance in tournaments... than cashgames, which I really prefer. Especially in cash games luck only counts on a very short term... Like an hour of play, but if you play 8 hours a day on let's say 3 tables, it will just balance out. Roughly said the guy next to you won't have had any more luck or bad luck than you have had playing... A lot depends ofc how you take your opportunities and know when to throw your cards away... Good luck.

Amen to that, but isn't the meaning of luck not the same as variance actually? Lol...

I believe more luck for tournament than cash games.

I agree, but for me playing with weaker players "fish", is also some kind of luck, when they are giving you their money ;). And you do need that I think of you want to be profitable... Cuz if all players are on the same (skilled) level then the rake will slowly just eat all of your chips ;). I do think you have control over your stack though even if you play with though players... But it will be less profitable.

You can see bet sizes and what they show down, there is more information than their cards. The real reason tournaments are considered less skillful than cash is the stacks are shorter and you are limited in the plays you can make. This doesn't make them less skillful but instead emphasizes different skills - short stack play and bet-sizing.

Save up all your luck? Lol how you gonna do that? - Just noting that the idea that one game takes more luck is silly, everyone has to deal with luck in whatever they are playing.

Tournaments require more luck. In tournaments, you can win a very large sum of money in a short time.
