Deep in tournament micro level tournament.. bubble is still away. You have 20bb stack. Blinds 500/250On BB you get pocket 3
UTG 2 raises 1500.. he have stack of 15BB Ann tight player
Guy next to him call.. he have 50bb stack an chip leader and become loose..
small bb calls he have 15bb stack.. and Tight player.

You are on Big blind with pocket 3 3 do you call.?

i call 3bb or 1500.00 chips all day-my rule for set mining small pairs is to not get into pot for anything more than 3 bb,s anything more than that i toss the hand-nothing better than flopping a set with 2 other ppl in pot:D

My thought on this is look at your situation.

- Deep in tourney / good with average stack.
- Stack size / I'm liking it. Have a shot to make it. Every chip is so valuable. Kinda limited to set mining & opening our range.
- Hole cards / 33 / pocket pairs / two outs perfect card for set mining
- Position / now this probably the second worst

I'd say save your 3bb & look forward to BTN :)

The price you are getting is good, so you could call. Calling for 3BB's shouldn't change a thing, you'll have to go all in sooner or later. With pocket threes you have a chance of hitting the trips. If you don't and anyone bets, fold and probably wait for the potentially good hand.

If I were you I'll fold in that spot , if you really want you can call but if you don't hit the flop you should fold quickly.

I'll do the same, with a good stack and on BB i can call for 3BB. But if the flop dont give me the set, and someone bets... i'll fold. :)

I would always call because these is not so high price to see flop. I had same situation pocket 5 5 and I called(I was small BB). Simply I had to see flop:) I have got set and so many chips:).

I would fold most of the time.
If I have over average stack and have good position to see flop then I would call.

I would fold in this spot most times. You are OOP with small pocket pair. While you could set mine, are you sure you would get paid off if you hit the set? What is the range of the smaller stack tight players (I'm guessing aces or bigger pairs). You also have a potential set over set situation on a low board (i.e. McKeehan v. Schwartz wsop style). If you fold flop when you miss, you lose 3 BB (leaving you with 17), which could end up in the shorter stacks, giving them a that much larger stack than yours.

I would play if first in in later position for a raise, but not against three callers of an early, tight raiser. Against (representative) hands like 55(UTG2), QJo(chip leader), and A8s(SB), your hand has 14% equity (calculated on cardplayer odds calculator). I doubt you have the 25% equity in this pot PF, and tournament survival is more important in the "middle" stage, as you describe you are.

Also note that hand is completely dependent on implied odds (which you probably don't have in this tournament unless someone else hits flop hard), as you are flipping against every hand except 22, and 3X (note the only possible 3X hand in this situation is A3s - 4 combos). And you are flipping against three hands (50%*50%*50% = 12.5%). Add in the hands like 99-55 (unlikely higher pairs are here since there was no reraise, unless initial raiser has it) that crush you, and folding appears to be a clear decision here.

The analysis changes if it became heads up (where I would advocate shoving to maximize fold equity).

I agree with those who say fold. 2nd worst pair, 2 worst position, too many people interested in the pot. How do you play a flop like: A25 with a 3 card flush draw? Even a four card flush draw puts you in a tough place.

Only time I would ever even consider a call in such a bad spot is if I'm getting bored or tired. 99% of the time this is a fold, and no, I'm not going to explain why.

...maybe for $1, which might have been more than you were playing for. :)

Better fold, because with these bets, they will have something much stronger!

You are getting 5-1 on an 8-1 draw - that should be a fold, BUT I wouldn't fault you for set mining as the difference between 18 and 20 big blinds does not change your strategy moving forward.

For what it's worth, part of it depends on how long until the next level, which is probably 300/600, reducing your chip stack to 12bb if you have to fold post flop. And the advice about small pairs 4 ways is the best advice. They don't play well post flop. Me, I probably fold 19 times out of 20. But that's because I have been burned too many times holding small pairs.

I call. We're already getting 5-to-1. Add some implied odds if we hit (especially with 3 others in the hand), and this looks like a good spot to set-mine.

I'll call, 3 BB's is not a bad investment to get a chance to flop a set, a boat or quads if I'm really lucky.

call and try to hit a 3. if you can't on the flop, just fold it and wait for a better hand. you would have 18 bb and that's more than enough
