There's an old saying, (a smart man learns from his mistakes, but a wise man learns from someone else's mistakes!)

If you're thinking this is an either/or, you're probably mistaken. No matter which is better *for you* - and it could be either since people learn differently - you can almost certainly learn more from multiple methods together than from just one. The trick is to find a mix that works well for you as well as materials that are appropriate to the level of your game.

Agree with Arj that it's best to get info from a variety of sources.
Hopefully those friends you discuss with will be at least somewhat skilled/experienced at the game.
Watching the big guys can be good, but I'm often sceptical as to how their play at the nose-bleed level relates to the micro-stakes that I play. Just had a re-re-re-look at one of Hellmuth's books, and there was some good stuff in it, of course. But not sure how much of it can be applied at my level.

Imo watching players play the main event in the wsop will help you improve your game at similar tournies/limits. Its not going to do much for you in a freeroll tourny or a $50 nl game. I would look for books/videos within your limits/games and also play to actually see peoples tendencies on a limit/game/site.

Read some books or some articles, they will help you to find out more about strategy poker and I hope you will make some good bankroll.

Oh yes, pay close attention for your next $10,000 buy-in. 6,000+ runner tourney.

Play as many hands as possible. What you're looking for is those spots that don't come up very often, but always kill you.

At some point you feel these spots and react accordingly.

The books will reinforce this, and will get you out of a spot before you loose on it. But some spots, unfortunately the most expensive ones, you gotta feel.

Read. Read again. Read one more time. Do you understand the concept? No? Get a deck of cards. Set up what you are reading about with the cards. Do it again and again until you understand it. Move to the next concept. Set it up with the cards. Two concepts a day, 5 days a week will strengthen you by 20 concepts per month. That will be 240 per year.
