You cannot rely on instinct alone to be successful at this game. Unless you have a somewhat mathematical mind with some knowledge of psychology and are able to formulate strategies in your head without realizing you are doing it you will not have much success at games beyond small stakes.

Sure, you can win and even be profitable at times, but you will not know why some of the moves you make work, and why some do not. Without knowledge of some basic strategies you will not be able to identify when they are being used against you and how to react or how to use a certain strategy against target players. You will be missing opportunities and leaving a lot of money on the table.

Poker may seem to be a simple game since it only involves a limited amount of decisions on whether to raise/fold/check/call at any given time. But there is far more complexity to it that I or anyone else could not even begin to scratch the surface of in a forum post. Without knowing where you are at knowledge wise it is hard to make a good recommendation. If you want a good basic book to start picking up on strategies search out Phil Gordon's Little Green Book. It will not blow your mind but is a great book for players learning basic concepts. After reading this book if you want to learn more advanced plays and theory pick up Harrington's line of books or books on poker theory by Sklansky.

Math is the easy part of poker, don't waste time analyzing every hand you play, because that energy diminishes your instinctive abilities. I have found that when I analyze I easily second guess myself and make mistakes. When I rely on instinct only, I make far fewer mistakes.
Strategies in poker change constantly during a game and you need your instincts at a very high level to make correct and timely adjustments.

Stay focused and think positive, with enough intense concentration, anything is possible.

self taught, never read a poker book

strategies are long period of math.
It's work to play long time, but not to immediate.
immediate depend on your observation.

and this guy is a CC league pro-no easy task

Im also self taught, no poker books, no HUDs,
like to think I put up a fight with the best of them...

BUT...
understanding math/odds/position...its a long list,
helps huge in the end game
if not for CC Id still be playing Ten Two badley
after I learned to only play premium hands right
then I started to learn how to play ten two (and when (and versus who) correctly;)
pokers such an everchanging game against multiple styled players,
you have to adapt constantly,

AND...
the more you study the better you will be,
learn what game you like, cash, mtt, stt etc,
stick with it, learn shove ranges/pot odds/M value...another long list...

Poker is a combination of instincts and strategy . There are certain situations where understanding the math behind certain strategies in the game , will give you a better idea of what your opponents are trying to do as well . I believe that you should study up on whatever your favorite form of poker is be it MTTS or Cash or SNGs and then try and combine that with your instincts . You have come to the right place as CC is a great place to learn as you can already see from your thread . GL at the tables .

If you rely only on your instinct, in the long distance you will go in minus. Strategys are based on math laws, so I advise you to familiarize with strategy articles.

Of course you should learn some poker strategy. You should always be utilizing some sort of strategy. In the long run any strategy at all is going to serve you better than none at all, unless of course your strategy is to play bad and get lucky. In fact you should learn a lot of poker strategy. As a matter of fact, you should learn all the strategy that you can. Even being familiar strategies that you yourself don't utilize is useful in helping you gain insight into how your opponents play.

Time and time again I've been asked why I played a hand certain way. Why would I call a huge bet with a fairly weak hand on very threatening board, or what would make me lay down a big hand in a place where many players would go broke. The simplest explanation would be instinct. But that instinct comes from an understanding of the game and knowing how good players play it. Just because my play doesn't come straight out of the book doesn't mean that I haven't read it.

Just like in chess, poker has also strategies.

Have to know it to incorporate to your repertoire.

Its a long term thing and poker needs a long term plan. Surely its a must.
