Just wondered what is everyone's thoughts on training sites like upswing poker or poker edge.
Do they really turn you into a expert or could you learn just as much with the free stuff on you tube and poker books?

Today on the web we find everything for free, without the need to buy them, everything we learn adds to our knowledge, after all learning will always be a good decision.

I think that just learning is not enough, you need to work on yourself, play, practice

It depends

I used one for a while years ago back when I was grinding every day, and it definitely helped me, but I went in with some very specific goals around improving my STT game. I found a site that had a good coach on that topic and yes, it helped.

I found going in with a specific goal was key, that allowed me to find a site that was a good fit and kept me focused on what I was working on. I was also at a level where the free resources (like discussing hands on here, reading general books, etc) had gotten me to a certain level but I wanted to move beyond that.

If your goals are more general, like "just get better at poker", or if you're not at that "taking the next step" level yet, you might be better off focusing on the free resources instead. Post and discuss more hands on here in the hand analysis forum for starters.

If you have to pay for those sites, they must be better, right? Or maybe not. Who knows...

I think the skill set & the mindset for the game is something you should have/develop on your own. But the guys who are teaching those stuff have been on various situations a countless number of times & very experienced speaking from their winnings of course.
So it'd be helpful very much of course. To have someone like that as your personal teacher.. that'd be great to improve your game IMO.

I usually put some thought into upswing poker theories. Not paid. But they release a ton of free stuff

If I can borrow a quote from RATT "what you give is what you get" - You will get out of training what you put in. You cant help but get better if you keep working on your game. How much work you put in is up to you.

Good poker training sites are worth the money. I'd recommend upswing over most of the current ones out there.

You get what you pay for in life, generally speaking, with a few exceptions.
