that is my thinking, but I wondered what everyone else thought. I waste a 1/2 hour or so every day with play chips.

just to add to what I said if I am distracted from the wife or dog. I would rather play with fake chips than real money.

I'M a DEVIL

I think It's good for your game. You will get called a lot more often, but you can try some things.
The best way to make money is to actually play with real money. 1$ tournaments are about the same thing. But I'm not sure about cash games.

There are things u can still do with play money u can try things that u see in real games, given that in higher stakes
u will probably see a flop maybe 2 out of every 10 hands ,like after the flop if theres 2 players in the pot with u ,u can try an isolate the pot ( bluff ) say if an ace hits the board, practice ur odds like u have a 35% chance of a flush if ur holding suited cards an the board hits 2 of the same suit on the flop just little things that will help u when u do play for money or if ur reading poker book u can try some of the things you've read!

The problem I have is when my wife and puppy are around I am constantly doing something for 1 of them. So what I am asking should I just play with the play chips and forget about how people play, or should I pay attention as much as I can and use it when I play with cash?

MAX101 thanks, that was what I was asking.

No,because the level of play is totally different. Its like preparing to go boxing against a professional boxer while practicing on your pillow.

This metaphor sucks but you get my drift . Play money games are just too soft and have Nothing to do with the real thing.

If you want to get your feet wet, make a deposit and learn the hard way.Its probably the best way to get good fast.(or at least faster)

For a long time I just messed around playing free chips. When I finally did decide to play for real, I found I was woefully unprepared. The free games had actually encouraged habits that people at the cash tables used to take my money. I can't see any upside to the theory that its of any help.

Absolutely not worth it. Play chip games are useless everyone goes all in with any face card because they have nothing invested in the game. It's just an all in or fold tourney. I can see doing it for learning the software for like an hour but nothing more.

I think a better idea if you want to learn poker or learn the software while still having the integrity of the game is freerolls. There is actual stake and worth in the game. Obviously the game is still not going to be the same as real money poker but it is definitely a step up from play chips.

The general consensus amongst experienced cash players is that play money is a waste of time, and can actually do more harm than good.

I am not agreeing. If you can afford to play real money, and have an environment such that you can concentrate, then you will more likely learn the game faster via real money.

If, on the other hand, you are like so many players who are mainly playing for the entertainment, and fun, maybe some sporting competition, then play chips can solve several problems. Like you are broke, or playing totally bored.

Higher buy-in play money games can offer more 'real' poker simulations. But play money will never let you figure out how to deal with the scared money aspect of poker. That scared money aspect is bigger than you can imagine.

So, IMHO, if you are never expecting to be a poker pro, then play money will be fine. Set yourself a goal of 1 million play chips, then try and sell em.

As for the complicated 'moves' that are made in real money games, these can be learned at the highest play money levels. However, they will be missing that scared money thing, so while the HH might read the same in either a PM or RM game, what goes into your thought processes will be way different.

Its worth only when u are trying to learn the basics of poker... Its less helpful for learning real strategies mostly cause the opponents are weak players...

There is also a league here on cardschat with play money chips. There is tuff competition there. I guess it depends on your opponents and your own state of mind. It makes a lot of difference when you stand to loose something of value.
That may be a good thing or a bad thing for you.
Try it out, see the difference.

I play rather freerolls than play chips matches. I think you can learn more in freerolls, because maybe you win a freeroll and than you can try some cash games.

I am not going to read the answers to OP.

There are people who say yes, people who say no.

The long and short of it (IMHO) is this.....

Play money is good to learn the basics, and to get a feel for online play. That is it. I have played a lot of play money hands, and a few months ago did it again to see how, if at all, the dynamics have changed.

You get calls to any raise, shoves with idiotic holdings, and you often cannot bluff/value bet and get a pair, a draw or sometimes even a T high off their hand. If it is a bluff, meh.. if it is a VB, good. Point is, THEY CALL WITH ANYTHING.

It has absolutely zero in common with cash games, even .01/.02nl is no longer comparable.

I wonder why anyone would even bother buying play money chips for real cash. It just sounds so bizarre.

It is great to learn the basics, and get comfortable raising, etc. You see what hands win and which don't. Like getting suckered with AA, etc. But, you will get more callers in free chips. So, it distorts.
