Hello poker world, I've been trying to better myself with my poker knowledge and find myself falling back into my bad habits. Sometimes I play too many hands that I know that I should not be in or bet when I know I shouldn't. I think that patience sometimes plays a factor. Any tips to get past this?

Practice helps. When you actually see the consequences of being impatient, that is, losing money, it forces you to study more and be more patient, more wise.

Remembering the long run, that's where the profit and skill show up. Easier said than done.

Challenge yourself to overcome all your bad vices, determine and act, the human being sometimes can not control what he feels, what he wants, but he can control his thoughts, his action and the way he acts. In that case even if the thought of playing comes, say "this thought is no longer mine, because I know it is not profitable", fold and go focus on something else that you are interested in, start in easy steps, for example, you can open a virtual cash room and play as you want for to relieve the tension, but with the real money will concentrate for real. GL and hard work.

I would give myself a period of time, perhaps a month where my sole focus is to make a correct pre-flop decision. Winning the hand does not matter, just straight pre-flop decisions. Keep track and mentally congratulate yourself each time you make the right decision. Seriously, actually say to yourself "Good Fold" This will help to mentally condition yourself to feel good about making proper preflop decisions and reduce that urge to play a hand just because you have folded so much.

Sounds like a good idea. I think I'll give it a try.

I tried to incorporate 'patience' on the tables last night and was doing well until my pocket queens got beat by 5-3 off suit by someone who was playing a lot of hands. After that loss I started playing more hands that I should not have been in but got busted shortly after. Any advice for someone who sometimes loses it after a bad beat? :argh::argh::banghead:

Read Harrington's Tournament Holdem book. He explains precisely why you don't play too many hands, since the idea is to survive to take down big pots.

Tourney hands

I appreciate the feedback. I do find that I sometimes take down bigger pots is when I'm not in a lot of hands. I'm gonna try to decrease the amount of hands that I play to see if I can get a good run in the tournament tomorrow. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks :five:

As humans, we have this ability called “Will Power” while not every single person may have total control of this innate ability, it does reside in most of us.
If you are mindful of your game faults but lack self-control or discipline.
How do you picture advice from someone else is going to fix your inner self? .........lol

It's tough. I also struggle with this exact problem. I find that doing something else while I am playing helps. When a good hand comes I focus but otherwise I'll just play passive. It may not be the best to improve for the future though... I think multitabling will help me, but I'm yet to properly try that

I asked someone for some advice a couple of days ago and I was having trouble finding the reply to the question. Can someone let me know how to create a post and follow it so I can continue the conversation?

It's something you have to force yourself into. I was watching some old poker after dark clips of Ivey playing full ring. I noticed that even when his decision was obvious, he always stopped and gave a 5 count before making a decision. Had me rethinking a lot of different advice I've heard. In no particular order:

-Go into your hands with a plan. Don't just put chips in the middle hoping to hit. Think through what you'll be doing in the face of Cbets, wet flops, etc.

-Use your time. Force yourself to take 5 seconds to rethink what you're doing in the hand and how it fits with your overall strategy.

-Constantly be evaluating your play and adjusting to the table, but don't change your overall strategy mid-session. If you think you may need to make adjustments to your opening ranges for different table compositions, rework your three bet range and sizing, etc, spend the time after the session to evaluate. Strategy changes made mid session are going to be weighted by bad beats and emotion. Spend time away from the table thinking strategy and make your larger decisions there.

-As soon as you realize you've made a tilted decision, leave the session. Doesn't matter if you're down. Chasing losses while tilted is a sure way to make them deeper.

Those are the ones I've come to take as gospel, and every one of them will help maintain discipline.

Play for the strategy you believe in, as well as be patient. When you get tired, you get worse.
