There are different degrees and varieties of 'tilt'. Some players have the misconception that going on tilt means going all-in with any old hand pre-flop after taking a bad beat, just to vent your frustration. Although you may see this occasionally happen at the table, there are many more subtle forms of tilt that should not be ignored if you want to improve your game.

Tilting is not always simply moving all-in on a random hand due to frustartion from a bad beat.

Every time you enter a pot with an opponent because you are looking to even the score with them because of the way they previously outplayed you or lucked out, you are going on tilt. You may elect to play more pots with a certain person in an attempt to outplay them on following streets, possibly because they had taken some of your money in an earlier hand.

Every time you do this you are effectively on tilt, because you have to ask the question: "Would I be playing so many hands against this person if I had no problem with them?" Furthermore, you are unnecessarily risking more of your money if you constantly try and outplay them with the worst hand. Always remember that in poker that you are looking to win money, and not pots.

Well written. The tilt can move to higher limits, or play in a tournament with a large down payment.

I have been guilty of this many times in the past, moving up to recouperate losses against bad beats etc, instead of down. Usually ends in me losing more as I continue tilting. A habit I have finally learned to stop!

I have been on all kind of levels of tilt. due to some of the plo8 I play. It is a fun game, and it can be frustrating when chops are found against you when u have an amazing hand.. or when I have low cards high cards come out.. when i have kkqq all low comes out.. well said about tilt and what it actually is...

Tilting has never made me money. That is the simple sobering truth. Great post.

We all battle the Tilt Dragon during sessions. But if we can revert back to what we know; tilting produces bad play, and bad play costs money in the long run, as well as remember that coolers, runbad, run good are all part of the game. We will be better for it.

Lets hold ourselves accountable for playing optimally every single session.

That same kind of tilt happened to me the other day and I spewed off what was going to be a profitable night to only winning $20. Should i have gotten up from the table and cashed out? Maybe gotten a table change, other than this one player i was targeting i was still focused and playing well.

My definition of tilt is a change in the style of your play (usually adversely) due to a negative outcome or experience in previous hands of poker. This can result in all the tilting actions described in this post.
The first step to going off tilt is to recognize that you are on tilt. Many times, it will not be until later that you recognize that you were on tilt.
So I try to get into the habit of asking myself if I am making the best decisions possible, and do this periodically during my poker session. This will let me not only determine if I am on tilt, but maybe getting to tired or not concentrating enough. Once I've determined that there is a problem, I can either try to find a solution or get up from the table and take a break.
